  • Fairways front nine closes Aug. 14

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Aug 11, 2022

It was just a matter of time before it would happen. The Fairways golf course in West Terrace has announced that the final day of play as an 18-hole facility will be Sunday, Aug. 14. Fittingly, perhaps, the men's club championship will be the final official events that play the entire course. The public, however, will have their opportunity afterwards. Word came to regulars at the course via an email newsletter last week but the loss of the front-nine that essentially borders...

  • Looking for a few correspondents

    Roger Harnack, Publisher|Updated Aug 11, 2022

Over the last several decades, many journalists saw hometown community columns as quaint links to how newspapers once operated. But with few journalists left in the Pacific Northwest applying for jobs since the COVID-19 shutdowns two-and-a-half years ago, we’re hoping to revive the idea of publishing content from local community correspondents — no formal training needed. We’re looking for volunteer correspondents who like to tell the world what’s going on in their part of...

  • Gas engines part of reducing CO2

    Don Brunell|Updated Aug 11, 2022

Implausible as it may seem, gasoline powered vehicles can be part of reducing carbon emissions. They need to be part of the solution and not brushed aside. Take for example, Glacier National Park in northwest Montana, there is a fleet of 33 tour buses powered by gasoline engines. Each year, they transport 60,000 visitors mainly across Logan Pass---the park’s famed “Going to the Sun Highway.” Without them, congestion would be much worse and fewer people would enjoy Glaci...

  • Get ready for more expensive gas

    Todd Myers, Contributor|Updated Aug 11, 2022

Next year, one of the state’s newly adopted climate policies, the low-carbon fuel standard, will take effect in our state. The legislation requires companies to blend biofuels or fund charging stations for electric vehicles. Although it has increased gas prices in California and Oregon, the governor and environmental activists claim it would cost Washington drivers nothing, while the prime sponsor testified it would cost no more than 2 cents per gallon. “Don’t let anyon...

Once By Lucinda Saue Once I was a child in a family of 5, two younger sisters who happened to be fraternal twins, born 6 minutes apart. My Dad was a 2nd born son with 3 brothers and one sister, she was the youngest, “oops” baby born 7 years after the youngest boy. My Mom was also one of five, but in her family it was four girls and one boy, and Uncle Keith was the middle child. Once we lived in Wisconsin, rich in family, cousins all around, many on dairy farms. Once we enjoyed our cousins aunts and uncles for picnics, hol...

Looking around at all the yard signs and hearing politicians tell us on television what a lying crook their competition is, I have to admit I miss Guv Reeve. Guv had a real first name, but I sure don’t recall it now, because this was back in the 1960s and 1970s in the high desert of California. He had his first name legally changed to Guv so everyone would know what he was all about. Every four years, he ran for governor. I worked for the Victor Valley Daily Press in Victorville, which is just 30 miles from Barstow, where e...

The West Plains Little League had one of its best outings in recent times at the state tournament - and it came from, perhaps, an unexpected corner. "This is a huge," WPLL President Stacy Ashcroft wrote in an email. "Little League is the biggest youth sports organization in the world and competing at the state level is...
