  • Wood Bat Classic ready for another run in 2015

    Paul Delaney|Updated Jun 25, 2015

Both Cheney and Medical Lake will host pods in the American Legion Wood Bat Classic 2015 as they have for years. The difference, however, is neither city has a team in American Legion baseball this summer. Their worthiness as hosts is based on the facilities and what each has done in the past. Both have impressed tournament officials. The 2015 edition takes place Thursday, July 2 through Sunday, July 5 across numerous sites in both Spokane and Kootenai Counties, "The field...

  • Lilac Invite prep continues at The Fairways

    Paul Delaney|Updated Jun 25, 2015

The planning for the party, and the Lilac City Invitational golf tournament that goes with it, continues at The Fairways Golf Course. The West Plains course presents the 52nd edition of the event which runs July 9-12 and will once again benefit Shriner's Hospital. "We've made a couple of changes to the overall theme of the event this year - not so much with a format change standpoint with the golf and competition - we're going to put a hospitality tent behind the 18th green th...

  • Letters

    Updated Jun 25, 2015

Exercise great care when lighting fireworks I’ve had extensive emails with city officials here in Medical Lake about my concerns of Fourth of July fireworks being allowed in this extreme drought season that we are experiencing. There have already been serious fires all around this area. Anyway, the way it looks now is that fireworks for private use will be sold legally, and used as desired once again here in Medical Lake. I just hope that all citizens will make sure their fire hoses are up and running, and will exercise g...

  • In Our Opinion 101 - how the Cheney Free Press editorial board works

    John McCallum|Updated Jun 25, 2015

"Who wrote that?" It's a question I often receive regarding our in house editorial feature "In Our Opinion." I get it enough, and lately from several readers, that it probably means it's time to reiterate how we go about producing the weekly opinion piece, and maybe a couple other things as well. As I said, "In Our Opinion" is produced here at the Cheney Free Press. It's the product of discussion from our editorial board, the members of which are listed in our mast at the bottom left corner of this page. It works like this....

  • Wildfire season is here, be prepared for it

    Updated Jun 25, 2015

It’s going to be another hot and dry summer for the West Plains, which means there are plenty of chances for wildfires in the area. It’s late June and we’ve already seen some wildfires in the region, including last week’s 145-acre blaze at Fish Lake, east of Cheney. There have been 306 wildfires this year, according to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Washington has already taken some precautions to address the wildfire season. Earlier this month, DNR imposed a burn ban on DNR-protected lands east o...

  • EWU graduates pursue unlikely path to Ph.D.s

    Paul Delaney|Updated Jun 25, 2015

It's been quite a journey for a pair of Eastern Washington University students who initially had serious doubts about higher education, but are now on the path to, of all things, doctoral degrees. Mikaila Leyva will attend Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind. in the fall and friend Amy Nunez from Yakima is off to Indiana University-Bloomington. Both just received their undergrad degrees from EWU June 13 and will spend the better part of the next five years earning both...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jun 25, 2015

1 Years Ago June 23, 2005 With financial problems stemming from as far back as the 2001 recession, plus the effects of initiatives 695 and 747, the city of Cheney was exploring a variety of ways to deal with pending shortfalls in revenue, hoping to not have to make major cuts in staff or services. Near hurricane force winds tore across the West Plains, and Cheney in particular June 28, causing power outages for over 4,000 households and numerous downed trees. Fresh from helping his team successfully defend its state 1A...
