  • Athletes of the Year selections tough to choose, opinions will vary

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Somewhere on this sports page you will find our third-annual installment of the Cheney Free Press Male and Female Senior Athletes of the Year for Cheney and Medical Lake. We actually started doing this in 2002, but skipped a couple years for various reasons, mainly staffing. This year we again had a staffing issue (thanks a lot Neil) but chose to keep up the tradition of honoring two athletes from each school who in our opinion have made positive contributions to sports throughout the year. Emphasis he... Full story

  • EWU police working on emergency response system

By CARA LORELLO Staff Reporter Would the Eastern Washington University campus be prepared to prevent or handle a major emergency? It's a question being asked a lot in the wake of Virginia Tech's mass campus shooting on April 16, a tragedy that left 33 people dead, most victims reportedly being students either killed in a dorm or classroom building. The incident has raised questions about the odds of an emergency of this impact happening at other college campuses and what should be done to prevent them, and EWU officials...

  • Cardinals Daily, King look forward to life beyond high school

By MIKE HUFFMAN Staff Reporter It's never easy to say goodbye. Along the way, Daily and King will have dealt with and fought the same battles as other teens: doing your best in sports and academics, while at the same time staying true to yourself and finding enjoyment in whatever it is you choose to do. • Cheney Free Press Senior Athletes of the Year 2006-07

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Someday they may hang a picture in the halls at Cheney High School that defines what it means to be a Blackhawk athlete. When they do, that picture could be of seniors Keith Parker and Amanda Swenson. Talk to their coaches, and they'll tell you the Cheney Free Press 2007 Male and Female Athletes of the Year embody all the best qualities of athletes, and of individuals. Leadership, positive attitude, goal-oriented, yes, they have those. But both possess a desire to excel that brings not just individual... Full story

  • Burns era comes to swift end at Eastern Washington

Eastern Washington University announced last Wednesday, May 30, that Mike Burns will not return as head coach of the Eagle men's basketball team next season. Interim athletic director Michael Westfall, who recently completed his evaluation of the department, made the announcement. “After taking a fresh look at the program, I felt it was in the best interest of Eastern Washington University that we move in a different direction with the basketball program,” Westfall said in a prepared statement. “While some have asked about th...

  • Top of MLHS's class had busy year, salutatorian keeping it simple

By CARA LORELLO Staff Reporter “The last conversation exchanged between graduating classmates should be memorable.” “If you could fast-forward to the end of your life, what would you want to see?” These aren't the words to a philosopher's thesis, nor are they found in the monologue of a motivational speaker. They're possible subjects to the speeches Medical Lake High Schools top two students of the class of 2007 will be reciting at this Saturday's graduation commencement. This year's valedictorian is Brett Berry, 17, who, de...

  • Universities beckon valedictorian and salutatorian from Cheney

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor What do Spokane Scholars, Jeff Butler and a love of science have in common? The answer is Tyson Todd and David Olson, Cheney High School class of 2007's valedictorian and salutatorian respectively. Both young men are 2007 Spokane Scholars, and both have chosen science as their collegiate and career paths – thanks in part because of the enthusiasm Butler brings to teaching math and physical science at CHS. As valedictorian, Todd, who is graduating with a 3.994 or 3.995 (depending on final grades) g...

  • The Germans are back, and this time they're furry

The Germans are at it again. This time, it's four-footed, masked-faced, bushy-tailed German “Raccoon Panzer Division.” I kid you not. It seems that back in 1934, Herman Goering, being “master of the German forests” (among other things in the new Reich), was persuaded to allow the importation of that mammal called the raccoon. Little did he now that the raccoon has no natural enemy. Fast forward 80 years and now the damn things are overrunning all of Germany, invading neighboring Austria and the forests of Czechoslovakia. It's... Full story

  • Sheehan's departure leaves country's anti-war movement faceless

    Cara Lorello

“Goodbye America…you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it.” And so were the parting words of Ms. Cindy Sheehan, notorious activist who became the “face” of America's struggling antiwar movement in 2005 following the death of her son Casey, a U.S. Army specialist killed in Iraq. Sheehan started a grass-roots peace movement with her highly publicized, month-long war protest outside President' Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. Ne... Full story
