The sound of bats connecting with the ball, the smack of baseballs hitting leather mitts, and intermittent announcements and music over the public address system will be silenced this summer at Holliday Field in Medical Lake. Summer baseball in the form of Medical Lake’s AA team, and the appearance of traveling teams at the Fourth of July Wood Bat tournament, will not happen in 2015. “It’s very disappointing to me that we were not able to pull something together,” Medical...
Cheney’s Ryan and Katelynn Smedley added one more week to their tennis season after winning their regional qualifying matches in Ephrata, last Saturday to advance to the 2A state tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, May 27-28. He lost to Miller at the Moses Lake jamboree back in March in his first match of the year. “We came in expecting a tough match,” boy’s head coach Jesse Erickson said. Erickson added that Ry...

Fife took an early lead after scoring one run in the first inning, then three more in the second. Cheney scored in the third inning on runs by Cameron Wiseman and Logan Pratt. The Trojans scored three runs in the fourth inning and one in the sixth. “We felt good after scoring those two runs, but we couldn’t seem to get it going after that,” head coach Mike Cagle said. Wis...
Cheney residents who walk by or through Sutton Park in the afternoon may notice professional boxer Daryl Gardner running laps around the block or hitting the mitts in the pavilion. Gardner is preparing for his May 30 rematch against Jason Davis at the Emerald Greens Casino in Tacoma, Wash. The first fight between Gardner and Davis was on March 28 at the same venue. Gardner, who had taken the fight on three weeks notice, caught Davis with a couple of clean rights, then knocked...
Three Eastern Washington University women’s sports teams that are already known for their success in the classroom have earned additional honors from the NCAA for their prowess in maintaining top marks in their Academic Progress Rate. The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a term-by-term measure of eligibility and retention for Division I student-athletes, developed as an early indicator of eventual graduation rates. And you can’t get much better than the 100 percent APR tha...
The Cheney High School contingent heading to the Star Track 2A state meet this weekend may be small, but they may also be potent. All seven individuals and two relay teams advanced out of the District 5/6/7 regional meet last Friday at West Valley, and head to competition May 28-30 at Mt. Tahoma High School in Lakewood. The Blackhawks girls finished fourth out of 15 teams at districts with 70 points, three points back of Ephrata, while with just two competitors the boys squad finished 12th. “We’re looking OK,” Black...
Ellensburg freshman pitcher Carissa Burgess held the Cheney High softball team to just one hit while teammate Karly Malcolm gave her all the run support she would need with a first-inning solo home run as the visiting Bulldogs downed the Blackhawks 6-0 in winner to state regional action Saturday afternoon at Cheney. Malcolm blasted a leadoff shot over the fence in center off Cheney starter Julia Boyd, and Burgess helped herself later in the inning with a single to left that...
It’s been a roller coaster start for the Seattle Mariners. Fans took on a positive attitude after the Mariners signed a few new faces – including home run king Nelson Cruz and left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ and others — as well as some old favorites such as Kyle Seager and Felix Hernandez. Many writers predicted the ball club would enter the postseason — some even labeled them as a World Series contender. Then reality set in. Seattle (22-23 as of press time) currently sits in fourth place in the American League West division....
Medical Lake took care of business as expected last weekend at the District 7 track championships at Riverside High School. The Cardinals will send seven athletes — six boys and one girl — to this weekends’ 1A, 2B and 1B state track meet at Roos Field at Eastern Washington University. Three other Medical Lake competitors will be alternates after missing the top-two finish for state. “The only thing I was hoping was we’d get a second guy into the 32 (3,200-meter run), but...

1 Years Ago May 26, 2005 A $12.7 million bond issue that would have funded construction of a new elementary school, plus remodeling of the middle school in Medical Lake, failed to reach the 60 percent super majority necessary for passage. The measure garnered 1,042 yes votes for 53 percent and 929 no votes, 47 percent. The seven-year restriction that limited placement of manufactured homes in land zoned multi-family residential (R2) was overturned under a new bill passed by the Washington Senate. The Cheney Blackhawks track...
