Last year, the Cheney High softball team notched a couple firsts for the Lady Blackhawks program - their first ever Great Northern League title and first ever District 7 championship. And while this year's team may not have captured the regular season crown, they did put themselves into the CHS record books with a first of their own. The Lady Blackhawks got hot at just the right time, winning three straight games to repeat as District 7 champions, and in the process earn the...

Medical Lake was one of the best defensive teams in the Northeast A League. Until the final 40 minutes of their 2016 season that is. The Cardinals, who had won five consecutive games, all by shutout, were helpless it seemed last Tuesday, May 10, in the final half of their 4-3 playoff loss at Newport, who would upset regular season champ Colville 3-0 two days later to earn a berth to state. The Grizzlies rallied from a 3-1 first-half deficit to earn the win in the loser-out...

Just as co-head coach Gene Blankenship predicted privately, Medical Lake’s boys cruised to victory, 92-62 over Riverside in a Northeast A League dual meet May 12 at home. But what was surprising to him was the performance of his girls who fell to Riverside by just four points — 70-66 — in the final tune up before district and state competition. And had it not been for an admitted error by Blankenship, the girls were likely on track for an upset victory. “On the girls’ (side) w...

Back in March, before the season started, Cheney High boy’s tennis coach Jesse Erickson said his team had a “good shot” of winning a second Great Northern League regular season championship — and he was right. The Blackhawks (7-1 GNL, 12-1 overall) wrapped up their regular season with a 6-1 win over West Valley, May 9, and in the process claimed a share of the district title with Pullman (7-1, 13-1). “To have back-to-back league titles is great,” Erickson said. “I’m super proud of our guys. They’ve put in a lot of time and e...

Playing with their backs to the wall is something the Medical Lake baseball team has found to be second nature. And finding ways to win has also become pretty much the norm for the Cardinals (17-4), who earned a No. 2 seed at the state 1A tournament berth following a 5-2 win at home May 11 versus Lakeside before falling to Freeman 4-0 in the district title game, May 14. Rallying from an early 2-0 deficit, thanks to a second-inning, two-run home run by Lakside's Tristen Cox...
