  • Cardinals surprise coach with boys' track victory

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated May 15, 2014

It’s not often Medical Lake co-head track coach Gene Blankenship has to walk back a prediction, but he did. The veteran coach has been correct in seeing the future enough to predict his cross country team would win the 1A state title last fall. And he’s been accurate in a number of other instances. But he missed when he thought his Cardinal boys would fall to Riverside in the final Northeast A League track meet held last Wednesday in Medical Lake. The boys toppled the vis...

Then last Saturday Medical Lake (12-6 NEA, 14-6 overall), Soliday’s pitching and the Cheever...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 15, 2014

The Cheney High boys’ and girls’ golf teams finished their regular season, May 6, in the fourth Great Northern League (GNL) tournament. The girls fell back to third place in team scores with 536. Head coach Gerald Morton said the team was hoping to clinch the top spot in the GNL, but Clarkston - who has led the league in the past three matches - is “just too strong.” He added that lack of experience and knowledge playing on the course was another issue for the team. “Not knowing what is right over the hill or around th...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 15, 2014

Cheney’s final regular season games left Lady Hawks softball head coach Gary Blake longing for the beginning of the season when his team’s defense had him experiencing nirvana. After starting the season with a .970 fielding percentage through the first five games, the Lady Hawks fumbled their way through their final Great Northern League games, committing 24 errors over 17 innings in lopsided losses to Colville and in game two of a doubleheader at Pullman. Cheney did manage a lopsided win of their own, capitalizing on nin...

  • Eastern's academic excellence is hard fought, well coached, too

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated May 15, 2014

Eastern Washington University sports teams have won their share of conference championships — and even a national title in football back in 2010 — over the many decades teams have competed in intercollegiate sports. But forgotten sometimes by the followers and fans of the Eagles is the fact that athletes who entertain them over the course of the school year are students first and athletes second. So while football has had its share of heartbreaking defeats deep into the pla...
