    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 12, 2016

The hope is that hot bats that came in last week’s game with Newport stay on the job as the Medical Lake Cardinals close out regular-season play in the Northeast A League. Medical Lake (4-6 NEA, 8-7 overall) needed just three innings to put away Newport 19-1 on the road May 4 and entertained the Grizzlies (0-11 NEA, 0-11 overall) this past Tuesday, May 10. The Cardinals finish the season at home Saturday with a doubleheader against league-leading Colville (10-1, 15-1) b...

  • Cheney softball stages a comeback for the ages

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 12, 2016

It’s not unusual to see teams rally from huge deficits to win games. But those rallies usually take time. For the Cheney High softball team, time — or rather outs — was running out in the Great Northern League regular season finale May 3 against league-leader West Valley. Faced with a seven-run deficit in their last at bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Blackhawks found a way to deliver the miraculous, scoring eight runs to upset the visiting Eagles 14-13. “I’ve never seen a team come from that far back in one...

  • Steady play gets Cardinals into baseball postseason

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 12, 2016

There’s no big late-season surge, just a steady pace that is fueling Medical Lake’s run to the playoffs. The Cardinals played just one game last week, taking a 4-3 win at Deer Park in closing out their Northeast A League season. Medical Lake has won three straight and six of their last seven and finished 11-3 (16-3 overall), in second-place in the NEA. That earned them a bye and a guaranteed game Saturday at Freeman in district play with games either at noon or 2 p.m. “I’m jus...

  • Mariners' change in ownership could be a good thing down the road

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 12, 2016

It looks like the Seattle Mariners will undergo another change in leadership, less than a year after Jerry Dipoto took over as the team’s general manager and Scott Servais became manager. In April, the Mariners announced that owner Nintendo plans to sell its majority interest in the team to First Avenue Entertainment, a local group of minority owners that also has an interest in Root Sports, for $1.4 billion. While Nintendo will retain 10 percent interest in the ball club, John Stanton will become the team’s chairman and chi...

  • Defense is key for Cards in soccer playoffs

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 12, 2016

The frustration that Medical Lake soccer head coach Zane Higgins had several weeks ago appears to be long gone. He revels more in the notion of being in charge of the team very few foes want to face in the 1A playoffs. Five straight wins, including a huge season-ending double-overtime victory over Colville, and a quick start in the postseason have the Cardinals brimming with confidence. "It looks to me like we're peaking at the right time, this is when we want to be doing it,"...
