Last year's event took place during the State 1A/1B/2B track and field meet at Eastern Washington University, and while attendance at Mayfest was good, LaBar said they wanted to hold the festival on a weekend that it wouldn't run up...

  • Finley's commentary deals badly with her 'woman card' argument

    Updated May 12, 2016

Guest Commentary from the May 5 Cheney Free Press issue: Laura Finley opened with “The ‘woman card.’ It’s so much nonsense,” “we really need to change the conversation when it comes to gender.” However, nearly 70 percent of her words refer directly or by implication to Trump v. Clinton. Prosecutor Finley raised the political issue. Cross-examination – allowed. Prosecutor’s case: fair and unbiased? Trump-related words – unflattering, “sexist” (perhaps deservedly); but Hilary’s words – “terrific” and “importan[t]...

  • Are you practicing what your bumper sticker preaches?

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 12, 2016

So there I was a couple Friday mornings ago, driving along Government Way in Spokane heading to work. A dark gray Subaru wagon-type car had been dogging my rear ever since I turned onto the road off Fort George Wright Way, heading past the cemeteries. Even though I was going 40 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, apparently I wasn’t going fast enough for the driver. When I finally got to the point where Government Way becomes two lanes, at the turnoff towards Indian Canyon, I pulled into the right hand lane to let the car go b...

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated May 12, 2016

One of the highest rated television programs during Super Bowl week last February was “Undercover Boss.” According to the Nielsen ratings, it drew 6.8 million viewers. By contrast, the “Greatest Super Bowl Halftime Shows” had 5.72 million. Viewers watched CEOs leave their comfortable corporate offices, disguise themselves as workers and risk the humiliation of doing something wrong. It is all about an awakening to what really happens on the company’s front lines. Too often peo...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 12, 2016

There are new faces in Cheney's so-called "Barmuda Triangle" with some notable local roots. The husband and wife team of Matt and Tracy Showalter recently swung open the door of Section 13, best known in its former life as Goofy's, but most recently, and very briefly, under the name, Asylum. The bar's name pays homage to some of the earliest days in Cheney's history. According to Joan Mamanakis of the Cheney Historical Museum, Section 13 was the township and range designation...

  • The event incubator

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 12, 2016

If you’re a Cheney organization interested in getting an event started, or finding funding for one already in the works, you should know there’s a pile of money out there to help. You should also understand one important caveat — to get that money, you need to show your event is going to get people to come to Cheney and spend money. If that event meets the criteria, Cheney’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee would like to hear from you because after distributing money earlier this spring, there is still over $77,600 — and climbi...
