  • Gallant effort

    Paul Delaney|Updated May 18, 2017

The arm of Suzanne Shores simply didn't have enough left. Four games in eight days can take its toll. After pitching five spectacular innings - including the fifth where she gave up a lead-off double, yet kept Deer Park from scoring - the Cardinals' sophomore tired in the final two innings and the Stags took advantage for a 9-2 Northeast A League softball game Monday, May 8 at Reinking Field in Medical Lake. • Separation strategy

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 15, 2017

Pastor David Krueger-Duncan believes misinformation is going around about his church's, the former United Church of Christ, Congregational, departure from the national denomination. One reason the church is out on its own - changing its name on April 30 to Cheney Congregational Church - is one many churches have faced the past several years. That is, how to responded to the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) community. Krueger-Duncan said the rumor...

  • West Valley hammers Cheney softball in doubleheader

    John McCallum|Updated May 12, 2017

Sometimes, you just have one of those days. For Cheney High softball coach Gary Blake, that pretty much sums up his Lady Blackhawks experience last Saturday as Great Northern League leader West Valley blew into town for a doubleheader. The Eagles left with a pair of convincing wins, thwarting Cheney's bid to replace them atop the league standings and in search of a little refocusing. Read the full story here.... Full story

  • Deer Park rolls

    Paul Delaney|Updated May 12, 2017

Medical Lake's pivotal Northeast A League baseball game with Deer Park was rained out May 5. Cardinals' head coach Kerry Kelly might have wished the contest, rescheduled for the following afternoon, had the same result following the Stags thorough clubbing of his team 15-2 at Holliday Field. • Sunset's Terra Boling creates space for learning

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 11, 2017

Things are a little different in Sunset Elementary School teacher Terra Boling's fifth-grade classroom. For starters, there are no desks and few chairs. Instead, Boling's students sit around tables on plastic buckets - albeit nicely padded plastic buckets the materials for which she paid for out of her pocket and assembled with her father. Boling said desks for 27 students in the crowded portable at the Cheney School District's Airway Heights school take up a lot of space. In...

  • Taking a stance helps foster understanding

    Updated May 11, 2017

Thank you for your (In Our) Opinion on not taking a stance...taking a stance (Cheney Free Press April 27). This decision is more than dismaying, it is a disservice to students who expect options in a liberal arts education, an education that provides diverse opportunities and gives them a chance to explore and see something for themselves. Although they can learn in a variety of places, given tuition rates, most students will make every minute count, meaning they’ll do what they get credit for. How sad that Whitworth’s lea...

  • Remembering Eastern Washington's farm-kid governor

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated May 11, 2017

There was nothing pretentious about Mike Lowry. What you saw is what you got! Lowry was one of Washington’s most colorful governors. He served one term from 1993 to 1997. He died on May 1 at age 78. There was nothing subtle about Lowry. He was not afraid to mix it up publicly nor put his political future on the line when he believed in a cause. For example, in 1993 Lowry pushed legislation dramatically reforming our state’s health care laws. He and his Democrat colleagues jam...

  • Support for Alzheimer's funding appreciated

    Updated May 11, 2017

This year, the annual cost of caring for individuals living with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias will reach $259 billion, $175 billion of which comes in direct costs to Medicare and Medicaid. Yet in 2016, for every $100 the U.S. government spent on Alzheimer’s Disease research, $16,000 was spent by Medicare and Medicaid to care for those living with the disease. Thankfully, Congress is taking action. Just recently, a $400 million increase in Alzheimer’s disease research funding was approved. I am thankful that senat...

    Updated May 11, 2017

We are only a day away from Cheney’s fifth annual Mayfest celebration (May 12-13). Both Friday and Saturday feature several activities that residents and visitors should enjoy. Mayfest is a huge production and what folks may not realize is most of the work that goes into putting it together is done by a committee of board members and a few worker bees who already spin several plates. Some of these people are having difficulty balancing their work schedules along with the hours they are committing to Mayfest. Community events...

  • New owners for Fairchild Mini Storage

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 11, 2017

For LeRoy Mattson his new business has somewhat of a resemblance to his old line of work in that it rests in the service industry. But that’s where the similarities end for the new owner of Fairchild Mini Storage, located on Craig Road west of Fairchild Air Force Base. Mattson’s former career has been in health care, specifically retirement homes. “I’m a licensed nursing home administrator,” Mattson said. Having gone to school in Iowa for his degree work, Mattson worked th...

  • Survey says Medical Lake students feel safe at school

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 11, 2017

Bullying is down among Medical Lake Middle School sixth-graders, as is marijuana use at the high school. These were a couple of trends the Medical Lake School District learned from the results of the 2016 Healthy Youth Survey, which students participated in last October. The survey, a statewide, collaborative effort between state agencies, including the Office of Public Instruction, Department of Health and Liquor Control Board, is conducted every two years with sixth-, eighth- 10th- and 12th-graders. Many of the questions...

  • Mayfest takes over downtown this weekend

    GRACE POHL, Staff Intern|Updated May 11, 2017

The community has a chance to get out of the house this weekend and enjoy the annual Cheney Mayfest downtown. There are new events this year, with the traditional roots of Mayfest still intact.
