Medical Lake’s Sierra Brock shot a 103 on Monday, May 7, and finished 16th out of 50 players to advance to 1A golf district play next week in Chewelah. There were a couple things that helped Brock get to the next level, her coach, Jerry Ornelas wrote in an email. “One thing was to focus on her own game,” he said. “She did not become concerned with what others were doing.” Another element was Brock relied on her irons more than usual. “Her fairway woods were not working for...

Cheney High School’s boys soccer team ended their season in a shootout, which was the way most of their games went this season. This time it was against Clarkston in a 2-1 loss in the first round of the Great Northern League playoffs. “The game was a microcosm of our entire season,” head coach Rene Caro said. “We are the better team for a majority of the game. Clarkston proceeded to add nine more runs in eliminating third-seeded Cheney 10-0 in Great Northern League first-round playoff action. Cheney...
It’s been three years, and I’ve finally had enough. If anybody with ESPN is reading, please, I implore you, get rid of the strike zone box on your baseball broadcasts. It’s called the “K-Zone,” and it began with the Cardinals-Cubs game in early April 2015. A roughly square box graphic superimposed above home plate that stretches from either side of the plate and roughly parallel to each hitter’s midsection. The box moves as the hitter crouches or stands more erect and is touted as representing the true, strike zone. Whate...
By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter With their league-leading goal scorer all wrapped up in smothering defense, and a second sniper hard-pressed to pick up the slack, Medical Lake lost its first-round playoff game 1-0 to Colville in overtime on May 3 at Holliday Field. Medical Lake, which had won three-straight to finish the regular season and earn the runner-up slot and...

All the Cheney High softball team needed last Saturday at West Valley was a split of their doubleheader with the Eagles, and they would be assured the Great Northern League’s top-seed into the upcoming playoffs. Instead, the Lady Blackhawks swept their Millwood hosts, and assured themselves something else when it comes to the GNL regular-season title. “It’s all ours,” head coach Gary Blake said Monday evening. With wins of 11-9 and 16-1, Cheney secures its second league title in four years, and gives itself a good shot at...
