The Medical Lake girls’ tennis team will carry a 7-1 Northeast A League record and a shared championship with Chewelah into district competition beginning Friday and continuing Saturday at Mead High School. The Cardinals finished the regular season April 30 with a 4-1 victory at Lakeside in which they swept through three singles matches. • Medical Lake girls' golf end up tops in NEA

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 9, 2013

The Medical Lake girls’ golf team is in a place they have not been before, or at least for some time. The Cardinals sit on top of the Northeast A League standings as regular season champions at a perfect 5-0 with four golfers in the league’s top-10 scorers. Now the Cardinals get to test themselves again with the district tournament that took place this past Wednesday at Sundance Golf Club. The last competition came at the Fairways, April 24, where Medical Lake scored a vic...

  • Blackhawks beat heat, opponents' intensity to win District 7 crown

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 9, 2013

A hat trick by junior Ian Schmandel helped power the Cheney boys’ soccer team past East Valley 4-1 and to their second consecutive District 7 title in 80-degree temperatures Tuesday, earning them a No. 1 seed to sub-regional play with the Central Washington Athletic Conference. The Blackhawks never trailed as Micah Weller got them on the board first in the 20th minute on a nifty, virtually back-to-the-net shot the junior right-foot-hooked in from about six yards out. But a...

  • Lady Hawks enter playoffs winners of three of their last four

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 9, 2013

With the Great Northern League’s No. 5 seed secured and no chances of moving up, the Cheney girls softball team on paper didn’t have much to play for Saturday against last place Pullman – other than head coach Gary Blake’s appeal to end their regular season on a high note. “Apparently they took that to heart because they really went out and swung the bats,” Blake said of the Lady Hawks’ 24-hit performance in sweeping the visiting Greyhounds 13-1 and 13-6. Amy Anderson led Cheney with six hits on the afternoon, including a t...

  • Medical Lake wraps up NEA title, top playoff seed

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 9, 2013

The emotions of a between-games Senior Day recognition ceremony may have gotten to Adam Paulson, but few Riverside batters did last Friday. Paulson, a four-year letter winner at Medical Lake in multiple sports, used his time with the microphone to choke back some tears and offer a heartfelt thank you to his parents, teammates, coaches and the community in his final regular season baseball game at Holliday Field. Then he went out and delivered a three-hit, 12 strikeout, one...

  • The smoking gun pointing to large extinctions

    Dr E KIRSTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated May 9, 2013

As any child can tell you, the Mesozoic Era ends with the extinction of the dinosaurs. Most geologists think the cause of that extinction was the impact of an enormous meteorite that hit the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. As the theory goes, the impact was so large it led to global changes in the composition of the atmosphere. Smoke and dust raised by the collision blocked the sun’s light for a time, making temperatures drop and plants die off. Many species of both plants and animals didn’t live through the crisis, as par...

  • Looking Back

    Updated May 9, 2013

1 Years Ago May 15, 2003 Six Cheney high school students, all 14 and 15 years-old, were cited for being involved in a Fight Club, violating the city’s municipal code. At least two Airway Heights city government officials, Mayor Dale Perry and Councilwoman Heather Tigen-Freeman, admitted they knew about reported time card violations of city employees before it was brought to their attention by city manager Lars Gare. Cheney girls’ basketball coach Marty Jessett became the second person to resign from their job in recent mon...

  • The continuing adventures of Tyler Grange

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated May 9, 2013

We left Tyler Grange degree team last week marching smartly, turning corners with precision. In 1947 they chose Evelyn Franseen as their queen candidate for the Cheney Chamber of Commerce May Day parade and won a prize. The bank account whispered “You are six months behind on your bills.” No problem. Tyler Grangers held card parties, carnivals as well as dances and served lunches at farm auction sales. Two years later the bank account was smiling with $1,800 tucked away. The...

  • Will tyranny ever come to America?

    Ben Shapiro, Columnist|Updated May 9, 2013

By Ben Shapiro Columnist Last week, President Obama traveled to Ohio to speak at the Ohio State University commencement. There, he trotted out his new favorite line of attack against Second Amendment advocates: He said it is unpatriotic to believe in the possibility of government tyranny. Why? According to Obama, the Founding Fathers created our government. The American dream and American government are one and the same. By definition then, believing in the possibility of government tyranny means opposing the Founding Fathers...

  • Sometimes you'd like something a little less serious in crime reporting

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 9, 2013

Some may disagree, but crime reporting in Cheney, Airway Heights and Medical Lake really is kind of “blah.” It’s got to be a sign of a jurisdiction’s size. First, to have police reports in the first place, even if on a weekly basis. Spokane has police activity up the ying-yang, but we seldom read about it unless someone gets shot, stabbed, blown up or busted with a lot of chemicals. For smaller cities, it’s third-degree thefts, driving while license suspended, domestic violence (which is very serious and not funny, make no d...

  • Neutering our state's language taking away from more important things

    Updated May 9, 2013

Goodbye penmanship. While the study of how to properly craft the written word on paper with a pen or pencil – now to be known as handwriting – has been largely a thing of the past in our schools for years, the word itself will no longer exist – at least in the lexicon of the state of Washington. And while it maybe makes some sense in an ever-emerging digital world to put less emphasis on the actual written word, the idea that the word itself will go away from use in the language of the laws of the state is the important thing...

  • Digging in Turnbull's dirt part of foreign exchange experience

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 9, 2013

Part of the foreign exchange student experience is just that – experiencing as many different aspects of life in the host country as possible. For Cheney High School exchange students Taisiya Feoktistova and Rebecca Reinecke, that experience involved getting a little dirty. The duo were part of a group of eight area exchange students who planted trees April 27 at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. Sponsored and funded by foreign exchange organization CCI/Green Heart, the t...

  • Another deadline passes on Myer's Fish Lake property

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 9, 2013

A 45-day deadline to clean up their property at Fish Lake passed May 1 for Michael and Dennis Myers. So now what? “They’ve pled guilty to a couple of misdemeanor charges for failing to clean up their property,” deputy Spokane County Prosecutor Dave Hubert said. The judge sentenced the Myers brothers March 18 and then suspended that sentence on the condition they clean up their property in 45 days, Hubert explained. “That’s where the May 1 deadline comes in.” The next steps bel...

  • Spokane Tribe study finds no impact to Fairchild

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated May 9, 2013

A new private study released last week concluded that the Spokane Tribe Economic Project (STEP) wouldn’t have an impact on Fairchild Air Force Base. Madison Government Affairs, based out of Washington, D.C., produced the study, which was funded by the tribe. STEP is a multi-use project on tribal trust property located northeast of Fairchild. Included in the design plans are a casino, hotel resort, big box retail space and various other operations. Local organizations, including Greater Spokane Incorporated, Citizens A...

Mayfest began as a celebration at Eastern Washington University the first weekend in May, but was shutdown in the early 1980s. It enjoyed a brief resurgence most recently through the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, which s...
