  • Taking risk should have potential for reward

    FRANK WATSON, Contributor|Updated May 3, 2018

I read an article in a liberal publication the other day. Although I lean to the right, I try to listen to arguments left of the middle. That is only fair. In this particular article, the author bemoaned the fact that his poor brother-in-law was being victimized by his rich neighbor. The brother-in-law didn’t go to college and had few marketable skills, so he had spent much of his life dependent on public assistance and can barely afford gas for his old Chevy. When he found work, it was usually part time, minimum wage and n...

  • Know how representatives voted before you take your vote into consideration

    Updated May 3, 2018

It is important to know the bills and votes of senators and representatives in Congress. This information is valuable to understand, as much of it is not reported in the regular articles of most papers or over TV or radio. What surprised me recently was our representative for the 5th District, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, voted to oppose a bill for a floor debate that would protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts to balance the budget in a constitutional amendment. In other words, her vote was to allow Social Security...

  • Is it public education or indoctrination?

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2018

Few can argue the point these days that the overall atmosphere of this country is volatile. Thin skin abounds and there seems to rarely be time for deep thinking and thorough study of a topic. And heaven forbid trying to find that the truth DOES usually lie in the middle, rather than gobbling up what is spoon fed to us in whatever medium we receive our news and information. I’ve coined the term “skews” which I think adequately covers it on both sides of the ideological aisle...

  • Yogi's wisdom is something worth thinking about these days

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated May 3, 2018

The late great philosopher Yogi Berra once proclaimed: “The future ain’t what it used to be.” It sure ain’t! Lots has changed over the last 60 years since Yogi was the catcher for the legendary New York Yankees. Hopefully, in the years ahead, we will experience a return of respect for one another and our way of life which has been a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. Today, there is too little civility and the public discourse consists of subtle and not-so-...

This Eastern Washington University football fan brought along a friend to the Eagles' annual Red-White game at Roos Field last Saturday. Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated May 3, 2018

The Horton-Strength Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3386 in Airway Heights came up with an idea to help involve kids in the arts that would also decorate their building at 1307 Loffler St. The organization sent out a letter to surrounding schools that invited students to create murals to display outside their building. The murals had to be done on 4x8-foot sheets of plywood and could be constructed in either portrait or landscape orientation. The only other requirement was that...

  • Medical Lake department looks to replace fire truck

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2018

For a truck that's a quarter-century old, Medical Lake's wildland fire fighting rig looks pretty dang good, in vehicle-years. And that might have residents wondering why Fire Chief Jason Mayfield is seeking to surplus the vehicle. Simply put it's primarily a matter of safety. The 1993 Chevrolet operates with the use of one of those ancient devices known as a clutch in order to help shift gears. Today's younger firefighters drive gas-conscious smaller cars with automatic...

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 3, 2018

Cheney High School freshman Johnathen Jacobsen wasn't even going to enter his award-winning ceramic piece titled "Sun" in the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction's annual Superintendent's High School Art Show. That distinction fell to another piece, until a fellow art class student accidentally tripped over the spinning wheel Jacobsen was using to work on the piece, causing it to fall and shatter. "He just went silent," high school art teacher Rebecca Demp...

  • Cheney puts EMS levy on August ballot

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 3, 2018

The Cheney City Council unanimously agreed at their April 24 meeting to ask voters to approve an extension of the city’s emergency medical services levy with a ballot measure on Aug. 7. The current levy is in its sixth and final year, set to expire at the end of 2018. The current levy amount is 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, and Fire Chief Tom Jenkins stressed to the council that what is being asked from residents is an extension of that rate, not an increase. Jenkins said the EMS levy is used solely for f...

  • No height variance for CHS

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 3, 2018

The expansion and renovation work at Cheney High School has hit a snag over the height of a portion of the proposed 500-seat auditorium sometimes referred to as a "fly box." A fly box is part of a theater's backstage that is taller than the rest of the auditorium in order to accommodate the scenery and lighting rigging and scaffolding. In Cheney's case, the fly box designed by district architect ALSC is 54 feet - 18 feet higher than the code allows for the school's location...
