It took the Cheney boys soccer team just five days to climb back into the win column after seeing their four-year long Great Northern League winning streak finally snapped at 45 by East Valley. Oliver Smith connected on an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute, and then assisted Spencer Yeager with his goal in the 51st minute in what proved to be the game winner against visiting Pullman, downing the Greyhounds 2-1 last Tuesday, April 7 in a battle for first place in the GNL. Pullman outshot Cheney 6-4, with Blackhawks...
Off to their best start in years, the Cheney softball team kept its perfect season intact with a win over visiting Clarkston last Tuesday, April 7. The Lady Blackhawks used 11 singles to score seven runs in the third and four runs in the fourth for an 11-1 league win over the Bantams, with Julia Boyd, Madison Kallsen and Cheyenne Hanson each going 2 for 3 at the plate. Boyd and Kallsen combined to deliver a four-hitter on the mound, with Boyd (5-0) getting the win. It was the sixth time this season the Lady Blackhawks have...
Now there’s one less item on the always seemingly endless to-do list. While I should be happy, the opposite is true and I am kicking myself for being such a procrastinator. Over the many years in this writing and reporting business I’ve had the opportunities to interview many a memorable individual, and had another on the list. But Orville Moe, the cantankerous and colorful curmudgeon who raised the money to build, and later operated Spokane Raceway Park for the better par...
Defense has not been much of a point of conversation in recent years for the Eastern Washington University football team. Unless it was the times opponents piled on the points, such as in last December's 59-46 quarterfinal Football Championship Subdivision playoff loss to Illinois State. But the Eagles' revamped defense made a statement in last Saturday's first scrimmage of spring practice at Roos Field, holding the normally high-powered offense to just one touchdown and 123 y...
Medical Lake’s girls tennis team has some unfinished business they hope to complete this spring. The two-time defending Northeast A League co-champions want to take things one more step and qualify for state, their longtime coach, Dawn Eliassen said. “Their entire varsity career they’ve been league champs,” Eliassen said. “And I think they’ve got a pretty good chance (to repeat).” It’s an experienced, senior-laden group. Cassidy Hagel is one of the leading varsity players...
If there was ever a time for the Cheney High baseball team to get their bats going, their April 7 Great Northern League game against Clarkston was it. After being down 14-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Blackhawks launched an impressive comeback, scoring 19 runs on 15 hits in the last three innings to defeat the Bantams, 19-15. According to head coach Mike Cagle, it wasn't a rousing last-minute speech or a single moment that inspired the team's comeback. "It was just...
Thomas Craig Stone, (a.k.a. Stoney), left us too soon at age 62, on Jan.1, 2015. Our loss was the gain of Heaven's own softball league as they added one hell of a good infielder. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Stone and Marjorie Stone in 2008. He is survived by his two daughters, Angeline and Taylor, both of Richland, Wash. He is also survived by his only sibling, brother, Bob, along with his wife Debbie; niece, Meredith and nephew Garrett; aunt's and... Full story
