It is likely business as usual for Medical Lake's boys' tennis team as they look to defend their 2015 Northeast A League championship. As for the girls, the rebuilding begins following their 7-3 third-place finish. Where the girls graduated six from their team, the boys lost only two. "We are on the other end of the spectrum, we only graduated a couple," co-head coach Dawn Eliassen said. They are Austin Brown from No. 1 doubles and Tyler Krivolavy. Brown teamed with Isiah Farm...
There was an obligatory Cooper Kupp touchdown reception, but sophomore quarterback Gage Gubrud and the Eastern Washington University defense also stood out Saturday April 9 in the first spring practice scrimmage at Roos Field. Gubrud completed 6-of-7 passes for 145 yards and directed the offense on both of its scoring drives in the 43-play scrimmage. But aside from a 67-yard touchdown strike to Kupp, a three-time consensus All-American and the reigning NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Player of the Year, the defense...

Additional work in the summer appears to be paying dividends for the Medical Lake girls’ softball team. Heading into spring break they were 0-1 in Northeast A League play, 4-2 overall and hitting the ball well having scored 10 or more runs in four of their first five contests. Medical Lake comes off a 6-13 season and sixth-place 5-9 Northeast A League finish for Tim Blakely, who starts his fourth year as head coach and 10th with the program. “Turnout is down a bit from yea...
The shots were there, but the connectivity with the back of the net was not in the Cheney High boys soccer team’s 3-0 loss at Pullman April 5. The Greyhounds scored quickly in the fifth minute, and got some assistance from the Blackhawks on an own goal off a corner kick in the 33rd minute. Pullman added insurance with their final goal eight minutes into the second half. Cheney managed seven shots on goal to the Greyhounds’ nine, with goalkeeper Dalton Mauzay making six saves for the Blackhawks. Cheney drops to fourth in Gre...

But it’s a new trail he and nearly 100 other top riders and ropers are blazing that he thinks offers a bright future for the sport. Gray and many of his buddies recently opened the inaugural season of competition in the Elite Rodeo Athletes on March 25 in Redmond, Ore. before a packed house and have since performed in Nampa, Idaho and Salt Lake City, Utah, April 8-9. “We’re all making...

The Cheney High softball team adapted the Chicago-style of voting — vote early, vote often — to their run production in a doubleheader April 5 with visiting Clarkston. The Lady Blackhawks indeed scored early and scored often, banging out 34 hits total in sweeping the Bantams 12-8 and 16-6. Cheney staked itself to a 9-0 lead through the first three innings of game one before Clarkston got on the board in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Blackhawks added three more runs to go up by 10, 12-2, but cou...
