Transferring work done in the gym and batting cage is not an easy transition. Medical Lake High School’s baseball team, and new head coach Austin Sharp, know that quite well. But now, after finally getting to play on their home turf at Holliday Field, the results are encouraging. Medical Lake played on the road, losing three straight, 8-1 to Greater Spokane League North Central (March 16) and then a doubleheader at Odessa, 11-1 and 15-2, March 20. The Cardinals saw their w...
Medical Lake got four hits and four RBIs from Suzanne Shores as the Cardinals ended a five-game softball losing streak with an 11-7 win over Newport, March 29 at Reinking Field. Scoring runs in every inning, Medical Lake got a double and triple from Shores and a complete game from Taylor Carpenter to earn the victory. The Cardinals had to withstand a Grizzlies’ rally as they scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut into leads of 6-1 and 8-3. Allison Duncan and Kaylee Thompson each had three hits for Medical L...

I am really happy with the team and we are going to just keep improving.” Against Deer Park the Blackhawks won 4-1. There were two singles matches with Hunter Pohl collecting the one win on that side by defeating Jared Lee 6-2...
It will be a little easier for Medical Lake head softball coach Tim Blakely to provide his lineup this season. That’s because there will be just one team in 2018 consisting a turnout of 15 players. Blakely said he sees it as a cycle after several years of having a junior varsity team. He coaches at the middle school, and a lot of times kids are turning out for that sport because it is the only one offered. “When you get to the high school you have four or five other spo...

By GRACE POHL Staff Intern The Cheney High School boys soccer team was unable to come out with a win last week in Great Northern League competition against East Valley and Pullman on the road. “It’s a tough week anytime you have to travel for two away games,” head coach Rene Caro said in an email. “They’re not the desired results that we want but, in the grand scheme of things, we will continue to build off the positives and continue to move forward. The first game was against the Knights on March 27, where the Blackhawk...
Hitting is something Cheney High School softball head coach Gary Blake has always been able to count on from his Lady Blackhawks teams, and this year is no exception. Through their first six games - all wins - Cheney is batting .424, averages 12 runs per game and has outscored its opponents 70-17. But it's that last number - 17 - that makes Blake smile because it signifies something new for his team this season. "We're hitting like we've hit the last several years, but this...
If second-year manager Glenn Chamberlain is worried about his Cheney High School baseball team’s 4-3 start, he’s not showing it. And after last year, maybe he has a good reason. The Blackhawks started 2017 at 6-3, went into a mid-season 1-8 slump, then rallied to win five consecutive games — including three as the No. 5 seed in the playoffs — to emerge as District 7 champions. Cheney edged Othello 2-1 in regional action to advance to the 2A state tournament where they blanked Olympic 10-0 in the opener before being elimina...
