  • Medical Lake boys top Freeman

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

Playing what his coach called the match of his life, Medical Lake’s Tyler Krivolavy scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles in a 4-1 Northeast A League boy’s tennis victory March 26 over Freeman. “There was an extra spark of life in him that day and his tennis IQ was incredible,” boy’s head coach Ty Lemaster said. Medical Lake swept the three doubles matches. Austin Brown and Isiah Farmen won 6-3-6-1 in No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Kason Bailey and Alex Neder won 6-3,...

  • Cardinal girls split matches

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

The Medical Lake girls battled both the weather, and their opponents last week, earning a split in a pair of Northeast A League tennis matches. The Cardinals lost at Colville 3-2 March 24, but beat Freeman 4-1 and evened their league record at 1-1 and 2-2 overall. On their trip to Colville, a cloudburst minutes after arrival forced a two-hour delay of their match. Annika Gahan at No. 2 singles won her match 6-1, 6-2 while the Cardinals’ other win came at No. 1 doubled where C...

  • Road is rough on Cardinal baseball club

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

Home was sweet, but the road continues to be rugged for the Medical Lake baseball team as it opened play in the Northeast A League last week. With rain playing havoc with a number of contests, among them their NEA opener March 24 versus Newport, and a nonleague game last Wednesday versus St. Maries, the Cardinals did find weather pleasant enough to play three games. They used a big hitting day pounding out 13 hits in a 15-5 win March 26 at home with Newport. That, however,...

  • Medical Lake track has strong finish at Ezra Gordon

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

The Medical Lake High School track team was looking for a way to get some individual improvement in performances. It appears they found it last Saturday, March 28 in Colville at the Ezra Gordon Memorial. With limited entries for each event, co-head coach Gene Blankenship said Medical Lake did not go to compete as a team, but rather to shave times from individual performances and stay sharp. Cheney ran away with everything — both boys and girls — in a meet that attracted 24...

  • Cardinals toughened up by rugged preseason soccer slate

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

The Medical Lake boys’ soccer team might be winless as they completed their preseason, but the Cards’ head coach Zane Higgins is not in a panic. Following nonleague losses this past week, 3-2 at Clarkston in a shootout, and 2-1 this past Monday night at Gonzaga Prep, the Cardinals, 0-6-0, now embark on Northeast A League play, stronger for the tune-up. “We’ve probably had the toughest preseason schedule we’ve ever had,” Higgins said. “Which is good for us, it’s a good t...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

Katelynn Smedley and Bridget Calvert recorded the only two wins for Cheney. Smedley, at No. 1 singles, defeated Bryn Hanes (6-1, 7-5). Calvert remained undefeated for the season after she picked up a win over Alexandra Resanovic (6-0, 6-4). Cheney’s March 24 match with Central Valley was canceled due to weather. AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

The Cheney boys tennis team continued their undefeated season after a 5-2 win over Lakeside, March 26. At the No. 1 spot, Ryan Smedley came back from a one-game deficit to defeat Seth Abrams (4-6, 7-6, 6-1). After he lost the first game, Smedley came back to win a close second game then breezed through the third. "Smedley tends to drop early sets but once he finds his opponent's weakness, he turns it around," head coach Jesse Erickson said. Britton Williams remains undefeated...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 2, 2015

  • Seasons to remember for EWU basketball

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 2, 2015

Two berths in the post season for the first time in a long time — perhaps ever. Two Big Sky Conference Freshmen of the Year selections and multiple all-conference team selections. The 2014-15 basketball season for both men and women was certainly memorable at Eastern Washington University and one, perhaps, that is just the start of more to come. Sure the seasons both came to a close too soon, the men falling to Georgetown 84-74 when one final rally fizzled in a first-round NCA...

The Cheney High baseball team was successful in its first week of Great Northern League play March 28 after they went 2-0 in their doubleheader against Clarkston, winning 11-3, 7-1. The Blackhawks were hitting the ball hard in both games. Chance Gleave recorded three RBIs for the day while Cade VanWormer and Connor Pratt had two. Cameron Marchand, Kyle Jones and Harrison King each had one. Clarkston’s pitching and fielding also contributed to Cheney’s run. In game one, the Blackhawks scored five runs on Bantam errors and wal...
