The Blackhawks were supposed to have a busier week with nonleague games against Lakeland (March 21) Clarkston (March 23), Medical Lake (March 24) and Lakeside (March 25). • Offense will carry Cheney softball in the beginning

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 30, 2017

Cheney High softball head coach Gary Blake has had more than historically bad spring weather to deal with to start the 2017 season. He's also had personnel issues. Originally, Blake anticipated 11 players returning from last year's team that went 13-11 and surprised everyone by getting hot down the stretch to capture the Lady Blackhawks second consecutive District 7 title. Cheney ended the season with a 9-2 loss to Selah in a glue-in game with the Central Washington Athletic...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 30, 2017

Both the Cheney High boys and girls golf teams kicked off Great Northern League action March 23 after competing in the first league tournament of the season. The boys finished second after they shot a collective 510 points while the girls were fifth with 89 points. Team scores in the girls’ tournament were calculated via the modified Stableford Scoring system where the highest total of points wins instead of the lowest. Thomas Baycroft tied for third place with Pullman’s Eric Martin after they shot a 91.Tyler Koohns (92) and...

  • CHS girls' tennis tops Mt. Spokane

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 30, 2017

The Cheney High girls’ tennis team had a light schedule last week with a 5-2 win against Mt. Spokane, March 21. Bridget Calvert, No. 1 singles, came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Halle Maroney (6-7, 6-0, 11-9) in what head coach Courtney Webb called “a close match.” “In that first set she was trying to figure things out and got it together in the second set,” Webb said. “They had to play a super tiebreaker because of the rain. They were going pretty hard and it was a fun match to watch.” No. 2 Alannah Lewis and No....

  • GSL's Mt. Spokane sweeps Cheney boys' tennis

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 30, 2017

The weather has been rough for local high school sports teams, particularly the Cheney High boys’ tennis team, who were swept by 3A Greater Spokane League’s Mt. Spokane, 7-0, March 21 in their only match of the week. The Blackhawks’s March 22 match with Northeast A’s Lakeside was rescheduled twice, first for March 24 and then again postponed for a later date. “The weather has been brutal,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “I can’t tell you when we’ll get that Lakeside match in.” Erickson added that the team was fortunate to ge...

  • West Plains sports teams are as exciting as GU if given a chance

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 30, 2017

Saturday, March 25, 2017 will go down in history for Gonzaga basketball fans as it was the day the Bulldogs earned their first trip to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament after they defeated Xavier. While most of my friends were watching the game and cluttering social media with pictures and posts, celebrating the Bulldogs’ win, I was watching the Cheney High baseball team come back from a one-run deficit to defeat Lakeside, 3-2, then turnaround and beat Medical Lake, 5-4. I get it. It’s March Madness and men’s colle...

  • Medical Lake baseball plans to buck poll picking them last

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 30, 2017

On paper, and that's about all Medical Lake head baseball coach Kerry Kelly has to go by, his Cardinals will not end up as those voting in a media poll which tabbed them: dead last the Northeast A League. And as usual, when a team is dissed, they use it as motivation. "That is absolutely unbelievable in my book based on our history and the success our program has had," Kelly said. "We're definitely using that as some motivation," he added. Medical Lake comes off a 17-5 season...

  • Experience holds the key to Cheney soccer success

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 30, 2017

With pretty much everyone back, the Cheney High boys soccer team should be in a good position for not only Great Northern League success, but in the postseason as well. The Blackhawks return seven seniors from last year's 10-8 team that lost 3-1 to second-seeded East Valley in the District 7 playoff semifinals. Of those, five are starters, led by Noah Prophet and Kelby Holland. Second-year head coach Morgan Hartanov has Prophet at one of the two forward positions along with...

  • Blackhawk girls down East Valley, boys edged

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 30, 2017

Cheney High boys track coach Derek Slaughter felt at the beginning of the season that East Valley was the program most everybody would be chasing for a league or district title this season, with the Knights being particularly strong in the sprinting and throwing events. If that's the case, the Blackhawks 73-72 loss last Wednesday at home in Great Northern League action to the athletes from East Wellesley in Spokane Valley was as close to an upset as one could get. On the...
