  • Eastern falls in WNIT opener to UW

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 29, 2013

Toss out an official’s inadvertent whistle and it’s possible the story on Eastern Washington University’s women’s basketball game last Saturday against the University of Washington in Seattle might have been about more postseason. But that isn’t the case so the focus is on a post mortem following the Eagles’ 65-60 double-overtime loss to the Huskies in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament at Alaska Airlines Arena. The loss denied Eastern its first nati...

Kayla Pruitt had a double in a game where the Cards scored three runs in both t...

The Cardinals scored nine runs in the first inning of a 14-4 win in the opening game of a doubleheader and then got even better in the 21-1 win over the Grizzlies in the nightcap, scoring 10 runs in their first at bat. “We had a great week of practice and everything translated onto the field,” Cardinals’ head coach Kerry Kelly said....

Four games into the 2013 season the Cardinals have surpassed their 2012 win total following twin maulings of Newport 14-4 and 21-1 last Saturday on the road. Cardinals’ third-year head coach Kerry Kelly assembled 39 prospects for their return to the Northeast A League and will carry 13 of those on his varsity roster. “It’s a group of kids that’s worked hard in the offse...

  • Blackhawk girls looking for big things in big meets

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 29, 2013

As much as Cheney girls’ track head coach Tom Stralser is uncertain about his team’s chances at winning a sixth consecutive Great Northern League and District 7 championship, he does feel pretty good about some of the Blackhawks winning something a tad bigger – a state title. Stralser thinks the Blackhawks have a chance to produce four, five or six 2A state champions at the Memorial Day meet at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Cheney returns five All-GNL first team membe...

  • Cheney baseball just needs time to reveal 'upside'

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 29, 2013

Cheney High’s baseball team is off to a 1-4 start, but if that seems discouraging, the Blackhawks and their fans can check a little recent history – last year’s squad also started 1-4. That team went on to win 15 of their last 20 games, seven straight at one point, en route a 17-9 record, District 7 title and second seed to the 2A state tournament where they lost to East Valley-Yakima in the quarterfinals. Blackhawks manager Randy Elam returns three of last year’s nine starters for his eighth season at the helm of Cheney...

  • Mt. Spokane topples Cheney tennis 7-0

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 29, 2013

After a strong couple of outings last week, the Cheney tennis team was unable to overcome a strong Mt. Spokane team Tuesday, March 19, losing 0-7. The final score, however, doesn’t factor in the absence of the team’s three top players. Boys’ team head coach Jesse Erickson said their absence was heavily felt, especially against Mt. Spokane’s experienced team. “Mt. Spokane has a much more experienced team, and they’re much more consistent,” he said. Mason Van Stone had the lone set win of the day, going 6-4, 4-6, 8-10. “That w...

  • Cheney bats not enough in 12-7 loss at West Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 29, 2013

Head coach Gary Blake had a philosophical outlook about his young Cheney softball team’s 12-7 loss at West Valley. “We hit the ball well,” Blake said. “You score seven runs, you really should win.” Both teams hit well, slugging it out for 27 hits, 10 by the Lady Hawks. What Cheney needs to tweak now is its pitching, something that will come as the weather warms, and its fielding. While the published box score had the Lady Hawks with just one error, by Blake’s count it was four. Senior Katie Bethel gave the Lady Hawks the l...

  • Oldtimers tournament a time to catch up with old friends, former foes

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 29, 2013

Last weekend a lot of attention was fixated on tournaments. First was the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. So much excitement, so much hype in the lead-up. Then so much devastation and depression for many when local favorite Gonzaga – the nation’s No. 1 ranked team and the West’s No.1 seeded team – first tripped over the curb a week ago be barely beating an upstart Southern University team. And after the Bulldogs completely “zagged it” Saturday against Wichita State, those wh...
