  • Mat Maulers win gold at Shadle wrestling event

    Updated Mar 27, 2014

Saturday was the 1st local tournament for the Medical Lake Mat Maulers. They were extremely grateful for the chance to enjoy an extra hour of sleep before having to hit the mats at Shadle Park High School. The extra rest might have proved to be a good thing as Medical Lake wrestlers took home 21 medals, including golds from Anthony Aguilera (age 10), Elijah Aguilera (9), Gavin Chaffee (8), Ethan Davis (10), and Isiah Giles (8). A complete list of the reported medal winners can be found in the West plains Scoreboard. Next up...

  • Big bats, pitching power Medical Lake softball to quick start

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 27, 2014

A new-found offensive side of the game has emerged early for the Medical Lake High School softball team, and new head coach Tim Blakely. The Cardinals’ bats were certainly lively in a sweep last week of three games, two of which to start the Northeast A League season. Last Thursday in their lone nonleague game of the season versus Davenport, Medical Lake got a nine-run fourth to break open a close contest and cruise past the Gorillas, 11-1. Then Saturday afternoon they kept th...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 27, 2014

Medical Lake head baseball coach Kerry Kelly challenged his team last Saturday to get 25 hits in a doubleheader in the opening day of Northeast A League play with Newport. His Cardinals answered the challenge, and more, in sweeping the Grizzlies 13-3 and 13-5, pounding out 29 hits. "It was a great start, we had anticipated we had a chance to get out of the gates quick and we took advantage of it," Kelly said. Following a 9-0 nonleague win to open the season Thursday at home ag...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 27, 2014

The Cheney Blackhawks baseball team went 1-1 in a Great Northern League doubleheader at home against Clarkston, March 22. Despite weather conditions keeping them indoors for most of the first week of the season, the players are getting out into the field and settling into their roles. Some of the returning players include pitchers Sawyer Sims and Kyle Jones. Tanner “Bubba” Smith, who played shortstop last year, has moved to second base. This season Mike Cagle, who made the transition from assistant to head coach, leads the Bl...

  • Lady Hawks bring experience to 2014 softball season

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 27, 2014

Cheney High School softball head coach Gary Blake has something he hasn't had in quite a while in his 2014 Lady Hawks team - a team heavily laden with upper classmen and experience. Ten of Cheney's 11 players return from last year's club - nine juniors and seniors - that went 10-11 overall and fifth at 8-10 in the Great Northern League, losing in the playoff's opening round to East Valley. Of those 10, three are seniors with three years varsity experience: Amy Anderson,...

  • Cheney: Target town to title town

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 27, 2014

Since 2009, the Cheney High boys' soccer team has entered the season with a target on its back as one of the region's premier programs - the team to beat. The only change this year is that target now carries a title, thanks to the Blackhawks win over Tyee last year to claim their first 2A state title in their fifth trip in the last six years to the championship match. Other than that, head coach Mark Kiver said it is business as usual. "Every year it's always a matter of...

  • The future may be now for Cheney girls' track

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 27, 2014

Despite being the smallest of the top four schools, with seven competitors, the Cheney High girls' track and field team missed a second-place finish at last year's 2A state meet by half a point. Five of those seven have moved on, four due to graduation, so it would be understandable for Blackhawks' head coach Tom Stralser to view the coming 2014 campaign as a rebuilding year. If one thought that way, one would be wrong. "I'm pleasantly surprised," Stralser said Monday after...

  • American-made energy could provide a global opportunity to lead

Rep. CATHY McMORRIS RODGERS, Contributor|Updated Mar 27, 2014

We live in a nation rich with energy resources. Just look to our own backyard — the hydroelectric dams on the Snake and Columbia River systems fuel the Pacific Northwest with some of the cleanest and most affordable electricity around. But today, we see a world ripe with complex relationships entangled by the Obama administration’s own resistance to develop American-made energy. With recent events in Ukraine, it is clear that now, more than ever, America must look to become the world’s energy leader. Oil and gas trade make...

  • Sagan knew how to present science in a non-threatening way

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 27, 2014

I’ve been enjoying the new version of the popular 1980s series “Cosmos.” It’s wonderful to watch a science show that presents discovery and provides historical context at the same time, keeping things in perspective. Science’s advances and discoveries impact us each day, each hour and each second of our lives. They cannot be ignored. It’s also nice to watch a science show that actually attempts to explain science. Not what science has revealed, but the process it went through to reveal it. That was one of the things I appreci...

  • Cities could benefit from exploring solid waste options

    Updated Mar 27, 2014

There are going to be several changes happening throughout the West Plains in the next several years and one of them revolves around the matter of solid waste. The city of Spokane has transferred control of the regional solid waste system and transfer stations to Spokane County, who will take the reins starting in November. The county wants to get into the business of solid waste because as the regional government, they feel qualified to run it, and they sent out requests for proposals (RFP) for businesses to oversee the...
