The Eastern Washington University football team opens spring practices Thursday, March 31, at Roos Field. The Eagles will spread 14 practices over the course of 29 days, and hit the field eager to improve upon last year’s 6-5 finish in which the Eagles sandwiched a six-game winning streak around two losses to begin the season and three to finish it. • ML softball opens with wins in three of four games

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 24, 2016

Medical Lake girls’ softball coach Tim Blakely thought he might have a pretty decent team. And he got proof of that on the field as the Cardinals finished their first week of play with a 3-1 record, including a victory in their opener over Cheney. The Cardinals earned wins of 11-6 versus the Lady Blackhawks March 15, hammered 2B Davenport 20-0 March 17 and split a doubleheader with St. Maries March 19, losing 18-6 but claiming the second game 13-9. “That was a big win for us...

  • Cheney baseball drops games to Medical Lake, Freeman

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 24, 2016

The Cheney High baseball team hit a couple of rough spots last week after nonleague losses to Medical Lake, 7-2, March 15 and Freeman, 9-5, March 18. Medical Lake took the lead after scoring three runs in the third inning, then added four more in the fifth. The Cardinals' pitching and defense limited Cheney to only two hits - one each from Riley Jones and Cade VanWormer - and kept them off the scoreboard until the seventh inning when David Winters scored the first run for the...

  • Cheney girls' track and field is ready for the big meets

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 24, 2016

When it comes to early-season meet results, the Cheney High School girls track and field team’s ninth place finish at last Saturday’s Dolphin Invite at West Valley-Spokane may be a difficult one to use to gauge the Blackhawks success this spring. Cheney was missing a number of its returning veterans from last year’s team that finished sixth overall at the Star Track and Field 2A state championships in Tacoma, so coming in ninth out of 13 teams wasn’t quite a true indication of what the Blackhawks are capable of doing. It was,...

  • Blackhawks boys track finish sixth at West Valley's Dolphin Invite

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 24, 2016

The Cheney High School boys track team opened the 2016 season with a sixth-place finish at the Dolphin Invite last Saturday, March 19, at West Valley High School in Millwood. The Blackhawks were paced on the track by sophomore Carson Brown, who placed second in the 400-meter dash in 55.20 seconds. Fellow sophomores Charles Johnson and Chris Diaz collected top-10 finishes in the 100, with Johnson third in 11.52 and Diaz eighth. Isaiah Dunn was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 47.90 with Kevin Houndonougbo in 10th. Cheney did very...

  • Mariners' Robinson Cano can bounce back from bitter 2015

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 24, 2016

With the 2016 Major League baseball season getting closer, many Seattle Mariners fans, and perhaps players, are anticipating what will hopefully be a new start for the franchise as it enters its 40th season. After a 2015 season where the Mariners ended with a 76-86 record, a fourth-place finish in the American League West, the firing of many staff members, including former general manager Jack Zduriencik and manager Lloyd McClendon, fans and critics are wondering what new GM Jerry Dipoto would bring to the table. But while...

  • Eagles fall in CBI semifinals at Nevada

STAFF AND NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Mar 24, 2016

A sensational first half just wasn’t enough for the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team to advance in the College Basketball Invitational. Playing without the school’s all-time leader scorer because of an injured knee, the Eagles led 45-43 at halftime, but faltered in the second half and lost 85-70 to Nevada March 21 in the quarterfinals of the CBI at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada. Eagle senior Venky Jois was unable to play because of a sore knee suffered March 16 in Eastern’s opening-round win, 79-...

  • Medical Lake baseball off to hot start in early going

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 24, 2016

The Medical Lake Cardinals' baseball team is off to a fast and successful start. But in winning their first three games, 7-2 over Cheney and a 7-0, 11-4 doubleheader sweep against St. Maries March 19 may have come at a significant cost. The Cards' top pitcher and shortstop, senior Cory Wagner, broke his thumb after being hit by a pitch Saturday in the opening game of the doubleheader. "It's a crack, not displaced, which is better," his dad, Dan Wagner wrote in a text message,...

  • Soccer success depends on developing youth

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 24, 2016

A youth movement is afoot for the Cheney High boys' soccer team. The 2016 Blackhawks have just one senior, John Beale, listed on its 18-player roster. Compare that to last year's team with eight soon-to-be graduates on a squad that went 12-7-1 overall, 9-3 in Great Northern League play and lost a 1-0 shootout on the road to Quincy in regionals. This year's team carries five freshmen, but also features a good mix of sophomores and juniors - seven who return with varsity...
