  • Greenhouse gases raise Earth temp

    Simon Smith|Updated Mar 16, 2023

We all need to understand climate science. Climate fundamentals are simple: Sunshine warms the Earth, and the Earth radiates heat back into space as infrared. Earth’s temperature results from how much radiant heat gets trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. GHGs are trace gases but have a disproportionate influence on temperatures. Nitrogen, oxygen and argon represent 78%, 21%, and 0.9% of our atmosphere and are not greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases only make up a fraction of the remaining 0.1%; gases such as c...

  • LOL at crazy hair-colored women

    Nancy Parry|Updated Mar 16, 2023

Who would have ever imagined that a fashion would prevail whereby women would purposely choose to look “not pretty?” I am past 80, no longer pretty and right in style. I just wish the green-, purple- and orange-haired people would add a big red nose, which would be a sign that it’s OK for their audience to “Laugh Out Loud (LOL).” Amazed in 2023. Nancy Parry Moscow, Idaho...

  • Hospital merger bill threatens rural access

    Sen. Nikki Torres, 15th Legislative District|Updated Mar 16, 2023

As a senator representing rural Washington, I understand the importance of accessible healthcare for all residents, regardless of where they live. Unfortunately, for far too long, rural communities in Washington have struggled to access the care they need. The challenges they face include a shortage of medical professionals, inadequate infrastructure, and limited resources. Residents often have to travel for hours to reach the nearest hospital or clinic, and even then may not...

  • Patients should have a right to know

    Katie Johnson|Updated Mar 16, 2023

Do patients have a right to know if an insurance plan is going to force them to use a mail-order pharmacy or the insurance-owned mail order system during open enrollment? Do patients have a right to chose who they receive medical and pharmaceutical care from? As a pharmacist at a local independent pharmacy, I have been fielding questions from patients using Kaiser Permanente insurance, who began receiving letters indicating they must transfer their prescriptions to a Kaiser pharmacy for continued coverage. Starting in...

  • Mileage tax hurts ruralites

    Rep. Jacquelin Maycumber, R-Republic|Updated Mar 16, 2023

The Vehicle Miles Travelled tax, or VMT, is once again raising its ugly head in Olympia in the form of House Bill 1832. It has been rebranded the "Road Usage Charge" (RUC), a more benign term, one that supporters hope will breeze by an unsuspecting public keen to reject any bill with the word "tax" in it. But it is a tax; a new tax on the miles you and I travel. And, while the bill talks about it being voluntary for now, the general authority granted to state agencies to...

  • Writers Workshop: The War Creek Bear

    Vern Hopkins|Updated Mar 16, 2023

I was scared. Like cold sweat, heart pounding scared. I knew it was all over. A bear was going to have me for lunch. It was late summer and the bear population was pretty serious about getting fat before winter. We didn’t see bears very often, but there were plenty of signs that they were around. Our Forest Service trail crew was camped on War Creek. We were maybe a week into a two-week trip and about eight miles in from the trailhead. The four-man crew was doing trail maintenance, and I was doing the cooking and tending t...

  • Turnout is huge for Cheney baseball

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Mar 16, 2023

CHENEY - There appear to be no "supply chain" issues when it comes to Cheney High School baseball in the 2023 season. "We have 77 kids signed up," fifth-year Coach Rob Beamer reported, meaning there will be plenty of players to fill every nook and cranny of the program. That's a significant uptick from Beamer's first season. "My first year I think 45 kids signed up," he said. "Then each after that, we've had 70 to 80." That will help stock varsity, junior varsity and even a...

  • It's a numbers game, again, for Cardinals

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Mar 16, 2023

MEDICAL LAKE - Building things is second nature to Medical Lake baseball coach Austin Sharp. Because when he's not teaching the game, Sharp is in the construction business where from time to time he likely has to improvise. That is the perfect skill required for Cardinal baseball which is regularly short on players. "Right now, our numbers are about as low as I've ever had them," Sharp said. "We've got 26 signed up, but my upper classes are just very light. I have five total k...

  • Cardinal track chips off rust at Ike

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Mar 16, 2023

MEDICAL LAKE — Leave it to Medical Lake’s track team to get the jump on other spring sports which have been shackled by a seemingly unrelenting winter. The Cardinals had to travel to Yakima to run and jump, competing at the Eisenhower High School Jamboree, March 11, but doing so with some notable successes. “Despite the fact that we have not been able to practice much outside, we had several excellent performances,” head coach Gene Blankenship wrote in a Facebook post. The non-scoring event produced a pair of victori...

  • Going dancing in sneakers

    Dale Anderson, Sports Columnist|Updated Mar 16, 2023

On Sunday, the brackets for the 2023 NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament were announced. This year’s tournament will have the Gonzaga men and women and the Pac 12 women’s tournament champion WSU Cougars in the mix. I have had the opportunity to see a couple of men’s regionals and one women’s regional final and one NCAA men’s championship game. For all of the years that I have watched the tournament on TV, it is really special to get to watch the games live. The NCAA does try to make the event special and the regio...
