There is no substitute for person-to-person connections—people talking with, listening to, and understanding one another. Nursing is one of the most noble and trusted professions in our society. Just ask any patient who has made a trip to a hospital or had a doctor’s appointment. Nurses perform many tasks – from menial to absolutely crucial – and all are key to a patient’s well-being. Unfortunately, as is the case in many other states, there is a serious nursing shortage in Washington. A report by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing warns the U.S. will need 200,000 more registered nurses in 10 years and saw an unprecedented net los...
There is much ado about lions and lambs this time of year. It seems those species are confused about who will win the ‘First of March’ contest. I don’t dare bet on either one. I can guarantee, however, that leopard’s bane, Doronicum caucasicum, (though of the genus Panthera, but not of the species Panthera leo,) will grace your early spring garden with its yellow daisy-like mane around its yellow-gold disk. Leopard’s bane grows in full sun, part shade and even shady locations where it is a hardy perennial. Another member of...
He was walking carefully, putting down one foot at a time, trying not to break through the thin crust on the snow. The scrawny old coyote had watered up at the tank in the back corral and was on the search for his breakfast. I leaned against the barn door and watched him. He knew I was there. He set back on his haunches and looked over at me with an expression that said, “Okay, I just took a drink of your water and now I’m leaving. So what are you going to do about it?” I let him know by my own expression that I wasn...

The Eagles went on the road where they secured the regular season title with an 89-82 win over Weber State in Ogden, Utah, Feb. 23. Two nights later the u...
