During the 1940s, military installations like those in Washington state in the Puget Sound region, at Hanford and Fairchild Air Force Base were protected by World War II-era antiaircraft guns. As the Cold War intensified with the production of more nuclear weapons and faster delivery systems, these protections were replaced with the supersonic Nike Missiles. The Cheney Storm girls U17 soccer team hit the road for their first national level tournament, traveling to Las Vegas Feb. 17–19 to take part in the 2017 City of Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Youth Showcase. Cheney's Chapman Auto Group was comprised of 24 teams from all over the U.S. Coach Brian Jody said they lost their first match to Texas' AYSES, 3-1. In response to the declining popularity of baseball, Major League Baseball officials have proposed several rule changes in order to make the game’s pace of play a bit quicker. One change that will take affect this season focuses on intentional walks. CHENEY Feb. 21 Nolan F. Atoa, 20, was arrested for fourth-degree assault/domestic violence on the 2400 block of University Lane. Batik artist Nichols Sironka's exhibit "Our Children, A Celebration of Our Lives" is on display at the Eastern Washington University downtown gallery until March 27. The exhibit includes Batik-style paintings and artifacts including a spear (seen here) and jewelry. John Aldrete, born June 24, 1951, passed away Feb. 19, 2017 at his home in Medical Lake. John was married for 30 years, he was a top-notch electrician and was loved by everyone who met him. He would always be there to give a helping hand. John's illness was long, but those who knew him before he got sick, knew him to be witty and the life of the party. Lawrence E. Gerken, 91, of Medical Lake died Feb. 12, 2017 at Spokane Hospice House with his wife and family members by his side. Larry was born in Wellfleet, Neb., Aug. 23, 1925 to Paul and Amy (Rust) Gerken, the second of eight children. The family moved to Trout Creek, Mont. where he attended school. Patricia Lee Soto, 66, of Cheney, passed away Feb. 13, 2017 in Spokane, Wash. Pati was born in Spokane in 1950. She attended Cheney High School where she was a cheerleader. She enjoyed art, dancing, music, movies, crocheting, traveling, the casino and most of all spending time with her family and friends. Fifty years ago in 1967, the Stare family donated a $250,000 school on an 80-acre site just north of the Cheney city limits for special needs children. The facility would house the program started six years ago by Sister M. Antonia.
