It might be said that Jeremy Bahr got a late Christmas present - on Valentine's Day. That's when he learned a long-time wish would be fulfilled when Bahr was selected as the newest person to guide the Medical Lake High School football program. He replaces Mo Owen who resigned the position this past November after two seasons where his teams went a combined 0-18. But while bursting at the seams with excitement, because school was closed that day due to snow, Bahr could not...

A wounded animal can be doubly dangerous and downright ornery out in the wild. The Newport Grizzlies proved that wounded pride can be just as harmful too, especially on the basketball court after they rolled over the Medical Lake Cardinals 67-22 in a District 7 playoff game played Feb. 14 at West Valley High School in Spokane Valley. The win for the Northeast A League regular season runners up in the loser-out matchup sent Newport (17-6) on the road where they defeated Omak...

It was a nail biting triple overtime first-place match for Cheney High School's senior Boedy Taylor at Mat Classic XXIX and it ended with him taking second overall in the 182-pound bracket in his final meet in a Blackhawks uniform. Taylor had success throughout the whole tournament as he pinned Aidan Mallory from Hockinson High School and Jacob Westfall from Blaine in the first two rounds. In the semifinals he defeated Jordan Lapointe from Franklin Pierce 6-0. In the final...
Sophia VanWormer highlighted the Cheney High School gymnastics team at state competition last week, tying for seventh in the bars with a score of 9.050. The sophomore also took home 16th in the beam with a score of 8.400. “Sophia had a great two days of meets and I look forward to her junior and senior year,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “The girls went out and had a great time at state.” Other competitors were Alexis Miller and Laia Vidal. Miller had 7.550 points in the bars, but did not make it to the final rounds....
There’s more snow on the ground, an arctic blast emanating from the north and the groundhog said more weeks of winter. So what better time to talk about baseball than right now? That’s right, baseball. Sunny days, bug-infested evenings under the lights. Hot dogs, sodas and around here, lawn chairs behind the backstops and down the foul lines. Baseball is beginning to happen even as the thermometer plummets, and for me and many other fans of the boys of summer (and in some cases spring) that gives hope. Major League Bas...
Sometimes when teams play for a third time in a season, and one team has dominated the other, it's the perfect time for a trap game. But for Medical Lake's girls, who were facing Lakeside yet again, the Cardinal girls knew exactly what they needed to do to cop a second consecutive District 7 1A title. They did so with a 54-33 win over the Eagles and earned a berth at the regional round of the state tournament. "Having played them twice already, three times last year we kind...
When you get to this point in the basketball season, it doesn’t matter who your next opponent is. What matters is you still have one. For the Cheney High School boys basketball team, that next opponent is 10th-ranked North Kitsap, thanks to the Blackhawks 74-69 come-from-behind overtime win last Saturday in Great Northern League/Central Washington Athletic Conference playoff crossover action at Wapato. Cheney overcame a six-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 63 at the end of regulation, then outscored the 17th-ranked W...

Medical Lake's wrestling team continued to excel in the postseason, this time at Mat Classic XXIX in the Tacoma Dome where freshman Ethan Davis won a 2018 state title at 132 pounds. "Medical Lake has never had a freshman champ and the last state champ was 2004," head coach Matt Leenhouts wrote in an email. That title winner was Garrett Johnson. Two more freshmen, June Figueredo at 113 pounds was third and Alex Gonzalez (126) sixth. They were part of a group of seven wrestlers...
