  • After strong start, complete game, Cardinal fortunes fade

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 31, 2013

Medical Lake’s playing one of their strongest and best games of the season early last week didn’t translate to the end of the week. After scoring a 49-41 Northeast A League win at home last Tuesday over Newport (6-5 NEA, 11-8 overall) the Cardinals (3-8, 7-12) fell 54-35 to Lakeside (8-2, 14-4) and then 52-24 to Cheney last Saturday in the annual Spirit Game. The split in league play leaves Medical Lake in postseason limbo as they prepared for their final league game, played t...

  • Cold shooting sends Blackhawks to three straight defeats

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 31, 2013

For Cheney head boys’ basketball coach Joel Soter, the key to the Blackhawks three losses last week is pretty simple. After playing three games per week for two of the past three weeks, they’re a team in need of a rest. “I think we’re a little tired,” Soter said. That showed in Cheney’s shooting percentages in loses to Pullman Tuesday, 68-49, and at West Valley Friday, 72-48, with the Blackhawks coming up short in finding the big shot at key moments in their 47-45 loss at Medical Lake in the annual Golden Feather Spirit Game...

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 31, 2013

In a season of streaks, the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team hopes to continue the good kind in their Big Sky Conference trip to Montana this weekend. “It’s a big week for us,” Eagles’ head coach Wendy Schuller said as she leads her team into games at Montana State (8-2 Big Sky, 14-5 overall) tonight (Jan. 31) and Saturday in Missoula versus the Griz, also 8-2 and 14-5. Eastern (7-3, 11-8) takes a four-game winning streak into the weekend following a 79-70...

  • Medical Lake tips Cheney 47-45

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 31, 2013

Basketball’s certainly a game of bounces, but for Medical Lake last week it may have been more about bounce-backs. After opening the week with an easy Northeast A League win, 62-40 over Newport, the Cardinals dropped a 60-57 contest they led late Friday at Lakeside. But after the disappointment in a game that might just toss the NEA into a playoff, Medical Lake pulled off a huge emotional non-league victory, 47-45 over visiting Cheney in the Golden Feather Spirit Game. M...

  • Eastern men snap losing streak with 76-65 win over Portland State Over Portland State

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 31, 2013

On a night when driving conditions outside warranted care to make sure there were no crashes, the Eastern Washington University took a similar approach in making sure the Portland State Vikings didn’t wreck the Eagles’ chances at ending a four-game men’s basketball losing streak. Eastern not only maintained but even improved on a 33-25 halftime lead on the way to a 76-65 Big Sky Conference victory. In six of its previous seven games the Eagles had led after 20 minutes only...

  • If it’s playoff time, it’s also time once again to start ‘gluing’

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 31, 2013

It may seem incredible but playoff time is almost upon us in the local high school sports scene. That’s what happens when you pack two thirds of your season into a 30-day timeframe – it goes by fast and furious. At least that’s what’s transpired as far as the Cheney boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are concerned. Between Jan. 5 and Feb. 5 the teams will have played 12 games, including a couple weeks of three games per week. Compare that with the seven games played between Nov. 27 and Dec. 28. It’s a busy schedule. Frankly, t...
