  • Tom Jarms loves supporting the ‘small town atmosphere.'

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Jan 24, 2013

In 1972 Ron Jarms, who worked for Osco Drug Stores in Iowa, was confronted with a choice of moving to Chicago or coming west. Ron gathered his family and came to Cheney where the Edgett brothers were ready to retire from their hardware business on First Street. Tom Jarms was 10 years old. “My dad expected us four brothers, Bill, Tom, Dan and Mike, and our sister Kim, to sit quietly in the office if we wanted to be in the store. We were not allowed to run around,” Tom said. Whe...

  • Saturday’s Spirit Game lets us see how it used to be ‘back in the day’

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 24, 2013

Back in “the day,” that magical time when it seems so many things were so much better, cleaner and real, filling the basketball gym on a Friday night was as automatic as students battling back and forth with the classic cheer: “We have spirit, yes we do, we have spirit, how about you?” To get the same electricity that once was just in the air in schools it takes more than just racking up the W’s. Now, that spirit and passion that was once just part of the fabric of a communi...

  • Gun control debate misses the point for school safety

LAURA FINLEY and LUIGI ESPOSITO, Columnists|Updated Jan 24, 2013

As professors of sociology and criminology, we would like to say we are pleased that conversations about how to make schools safer are occurring across the nation. Prompted by the tragic shooting of 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., as well as the now-decades long spate of school and campus mass shooters, this dialogue should provide opportunities for those who spend their days with children and youth to share their expertise about what will keep our schools safe. Instead, these...

  • Public access could become much tougher, if bills pass in Legislature

    Updated Jan 24, 2013

Two bills making their way through Washington Legislature aim to take away the public’s right to transparent government and review of public decision making. If your city, or the state ever made a decision you questioned, or if you joined a committee to have your city council members or state officials hear your side of a controversy, then write your senator and representative immediately and stop House Bills HB 1128 and HB 1185. Laws on our books protect citizens’ rights to information, RCW 42.56.030 “The People, in deleg...

  • Re-defining the meaning of greatest country in the world, through happiness

    John McCallum|Updated Jan 24, 2013

I’ve recently developed an interest in lists. Actually it’s always been there, starting likely with David Letterman’s show in the 1980s and his top 10. When I lived in Seattle there was “The Lame List,” on a comedy show called “Almost Live” produced by NBC affiliate KING. Check these out on YouTube. Lately, lists about where countries stand in a variety of categories have caught my eye. The most recent is the list of “World’s Happiest Countries” determined through a variety of factors compiled by the London-based think...

  • Finding ways to make people pay for their crimes

    Updated Jan 24, 2013

Why 23-year-old Joseph Knop broke into the Lake Assembly Church in Medical Lake Jan. 13 and did an estimated $50,000 in damage still remains a mystery. Doors destroyed, shattered glass vases and windows. Electronics and musical instruments ruined and items stolen with church volunteers called upon to put things back in order so that services could resume. Conjecture ranges from Knop being angry at the church where he reportedly attended in his youth to being high on drugs, or both. Knop would later confess to the crime. But b...

That’s the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that ended campaign-spending limits for corporations and special interest groups. A new report from the watchdog group Demos says b...

It remains to be seen, though, how many stores, restaurants and other vendors actually will start imposing surcharges, which are commonly called “checkout fees.” News outlets such as Forbes and Consumer Reports have reported that merchants fear backlash. For instance, Dow Jones Bus...

  • Bills ignite debate on health insurance abortion requirement

    Zoey Palmer, Reporter|Updated Jan 24, 2013

WNPA Olympia News Bureau Two bills introduced early in this legislative session would require any health-insurance plan in Washington state that covers maternal care to also cover abortions. HB 1044 and SB 5009, collectively known as the Reproductive Parity Act, would reinforce existing state law that requires insurance companies to cover abortion except in cases in which the insurance provider is explicitly religious. Rep. Eileen Cody (D-34th District, Seattle), one of the House bill’s primary sponsors, claims the l...

Jarms Hardware owner Tom Jarms said he had a couple calls last weekend when word came out that the family-owned business on Second Street was moving to a new location next to the Trading Company at 6 Cheney-Spangle Road. Apparently some believed the business that has spent more than 35 years in Cheney was moving out of town. “Because you know there’s another Trading Company at the other end of the road,” Jarms said, referring to the grocery store located just off SR 195 in Latah Valley. Jarms said Monday that they’re not mov...
