STAFF AND NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Jan 19, 2017

Last time out at Reese Court, the Eastern Washington men’s basketball team got half the job done when it came to “protecting home court” as head coach Jim Hayford likes to say. Following a convincing 82-64 win over Montana State, the Eagles faded in a 65-59 loss to Montana that ruined their undefeated record at home. Now in their usual dogfight with nine other teams — all separated by one or two losses for eventual Big Sky Conference tournament seeding with a 3-2 league record — Eastern gets another chance. Starting tonight (...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 19, 2017

The energy was intense in last week’s Golden Feather spirit game played before a packed house. But it may have been pale by comparison to what happened two nights earlier on the same Medical Lake gym floor, turned coaches’ chessboard. That’s where Medical Lake (6-1 NEA, 10-3 overall) scored a 61-60 Northeast A League win over Lakeside to begin a perfect week in league play that concluded with a 76-47 shelling of Colville. Between came a 65-56, nonleague loss in the Golde...

The Blackhawks fell 46-43 to the visiting Eagles while the Lady Blackhawks lost a similarly close contest, 43-39. John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 19, 2017

Cheney boys swimming head coach Jennifer Hochwalt was a little worried heading into last Thursday's home meet between the Blackhawks and visiting Selah Vikings and a co-op team from East Valley-Yakima. Hochwalt's high school boys team hadn't swam competitively since Dec. 3 - ironically a five-team meet in Yakima that included, Selah, Grandview, Prosser and East Valley-Yakima. The Blackhawks swam to wins over all four schools, and Hochwalt wasn't sure if the layoff - due to...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 19, 2017

It’s been almost two years since Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired from boxing. Since then, there has been speculation that he would return to fight if the right bout and offer came along — including a rematch with rival Manny Pacquiao. It appears there could a fight that could bring Mayweather back in the ring as a fighter, but it’s not against any of today’s boxing greats. Actually, it’s a fighter who has never competed in a professional boxing match. For the last several months, Mayweather has been verbally sparring with curr...
