    CHENEY – Three police officers and one dispatcher were awarded ‘life saving’ medals by the American National Police Hall of Fame on Dec. 23 and Jan. 11. The Cheney Police Department announced officer Brad Deines, Ian Sauve, and Sgt. Austin Brantingham, along with dispatcher Lawrence Smith, earned the honor by providing crucial aid during a welfare check June 20, 2023.     CHENEY – The freezing cold weather will transition into slightly warmer weather this week, going from lows in the single digits to lows of around 27 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Two rounds of snow were predicted this week — the first Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, the agency reported, noting 3-5 inches of snow was expected.     SPOKANE – Record cold temperatures hit the area over over the past weekend, Jan. 13-14. The National Weather Service-Spokane doesn’t collect specific data for Cheney. But on Saturday, Jan. 13, Spokane hit a low of minus-7 degrees, which tied the record low set in 1949, the agency reported.     CHENEY – The City Council deliberated on whether to add Juneteenth as a paid holiday during a Jan. 9 meeting. Juneteenth is a new federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery on June 19. Juneteenth is a part of a proposed contract for city employees in 2024. “The estimated cost from adopting Juneteenth is roughly $50,000 for that day,” City Administrator Mark Schuller said.
