  • Birds of the Feather

    Updated Jan 17, 2019

On Saturday, Jan. 12, Cheney broke an 11-year losing streak, taking home the coveted Golden Feather for the most school spirit. Cheney High School assistant cheer coach Olivia Hovater shoots video of the Cheney cheer squad at Eastern Washington University’s Reese Court on Saturday during the annual Spirit Game competition against Medical Lake High School; a “Wonka Bar” dances as one of the features of Medical Lake’s Willy Wonka-esque skit during halftime of the boys basketb...

  • Feed Medical Lake offers more than a meal

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 17, 2019

Some arrived in the basement of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Medical Lake for the camaraderie and community. Others came for the chicken and dumplings. Whether for friendship or a hot meal, the line was long. The event was another monthly hot dinner offered by Feed Medical Lake, a non-profit food pantry born from what Director Joanna William’s felt was divine direction after being spared death from cancer. “Lord, if you have work for me, I’ll live,” she said of the prayer th...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jan 17, 2019

1 Years Ago Jan. 29, 2009 The Cheney City Council voted to demolish the Wren Pierson Community Center when cracked support beams in the multipurpose room raised safety concerns. Crews from all over the region responded to an overturned semi-truck in Tyler that flipped on a sharp bend on State Route 904 while approaching Interstate 90. The Medical Lake School District purchased a new playground structure for its elementary school after its old wooden playground was torn down. 20 Years Ago Jan. 19, 1999 Cheney Police Chief...

  • It's hard to ignore Trump - even when necessary

    Updated Jan 17, 2019

Democrats are sometimes faulted for not having a positive policy message — just anti-Trumpism. But how can one discern whether that’s true when reliable mainstream news is so dominated by President Trump’s bizarre, dishonest, vindictive and narcissistic behavior. Important news hardly gets a word in edgewise because of non-stop coverage of Trump, and this only encourages additional drivel from him. Curiously, this is how James Comey, in his excellent book, “A Higher Loyalty,” describes his meetings with Trump. Comey sel...

  • Cheney Little Guy wrestling fundraiser is a success

    Updated Jan 17, 2019

Cheney Hawks Little Guys Wrestling Club just concluded their first-ever, two-weekend Christmas Tree recycling fundraiser, which has been deemed a great success. This would not have been possible without the generous support from our neighbors in Cheney and the surrounding area. We were so grateful for every donation of trees and in awe of those folks who said they didn’t have a tree but donated to our cause anyway. Because of you, we are well on our way to purchasing much needed new singlets for the upcoming season. What a r...

  • Crisis is in the White House, not on the southern border

    Updated Jan 17, 2019

I don’t see any major crisis on our southern border with Mexico. In my strongest opinion, I see the crisis itself, as D.J. Trump. People who are a danger to themselves or to others are in need of psychiatric intervention and possibly being committed. I have no doubt (my opinion) that D. J. Trump is becoming a danger to the American people and to our country as a whole. His perpetual vocabulary of nonsensical superlatives gets worse everyday along with his flailing hand waving. In my strongest opinion, he is becoming more a...

  • East Coast seaports are ramping up their capabilities

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated Jan 17, 2019

While many eyes are on trade talks between our country and China, America’s port leaders are positioning their seaports to compete for increasing volumes of container traffic. After container shipments surged in November — primarily from pre-tariff contracts —they plunged by year end, an impact of the U.S. and China trade war. Outbound container volume at the neighboring ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach fell 11.8 percent in November from the same month in 2017. It was a...

  • Shutdown proves one thing: our government is truly broken

    FRANK WATSON, Contributor|Updated Jan 17, 2019

It looks as if the current government shutdown will set a new record with no end in sight. President Trump has avowed that he will not end the standoff unless there is funding for his wall. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is just as adamant that there will be no funding for the wall. Neither side shows any sign of budging. So, who is to blame? Is it the President’s fault for sticking to his campaign promises, or is it the Democrats’ fault for standing on their ideology? Maybe a bit of both, and maybe this budget confrontation is...

  • Look beyond border to solve immigration

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 17, 2019

We Americans like to think of ourselves as problem solvers of a sort. If something is wrong, or needs fixing, we feel we can get to the heart of the matter and figure out a solution that is best addressed to solve it. There is a problem with immigration in this country — legal and illegal. Always has been, and if we don’t figure things out, always will be. Spending $5.7 billion to build a great, big, beautiful wall — even a not-so-big and beautiful steel barrier — is not a solution. Never has been, never will be. There a...

  • Medical Lake boys unable to overcome top-ranked opponents

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 17, 2019

The Medical Lake boys varsity basketball crew found themselves on the receiving end of two losses in league and non-league play last week, giving up a total of 147 points against Deer Park and Cashmere. Deer Park The Card boys gave the visiting Deer Park Stags a run for their money in a hard-fought, back-and-forth game during Northwest A League play Friday, Jan 4, coming out aggressively from the initial tip-off. But in the end their efforts weren't enough to stifle the...

  • Lady Blackhawks find hardwood success over holiday

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 17, 2019

Cheney High’s girls basketball team found the holiday break from school to be a little therapeutic. The Lady Blackhawks won three of their four games, starting with a pair of wins at the Eagle Holiday Classic at West Valley High School, Dec. 27-29. Cheney had four players in double-figure scoring in their Classic opener against Northeast A League Newport (1-9, 0-4) in Millwood, opening a 37-23 halftime lead and cruising to a 67-39 win over the Grizzlies. Aijia Loffredi led the way with a game-high 17 points, with Maggie S...

  • Eagles announce 2019 football schedule

    Updated Jan 17, 2019

Eastern Washington University has completed its 12-game football schedule in 2019 with the addition of a road game at Idaho on Sept. 21 and a non-conference home game vs. Lindenwood on Sept. 7. The schedule was announced Friday (Jan. 11) by Eastern Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey. With the return of Idaho to the Big Sky Conference in 2018 and the departure of North Dakota, Eastern will annually play the Vandals in a league game. However, 2019 was left out as a league game because of schedules...
