The Cheney and Medical Lake wrestling teams competed in the annual Blackhawk Invitational tournament, Jan. 7. Cheney finished fourth as a team and had several athletes make it to the podium, including Boedy Taylor (182 pounds) and Josh Baker (220), who won their brackets. Elda Cluff Rippy, a former resident of Cheney, passed away on Dec. 20, 2016 at the age of 102 in St. George, Utah. Born in Tabasco, Mexico while her father was overseeing a fruit plantation, she lived there until her family moved to California in 1925. In 1939, she married Bishop Rippy and together they had four children. The family moved to Yucaipa, Calif. in 1956. The Cheney High School boys basketball team played a solid game for three quarters last Tuesday in Pullman, only to have another offensively-cold third quarter deny them an upset of the fifth-ranked Greyhounds, falling 59-53. Robert T. Morrow, 85 of Spokane, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 at Providence Holy Family Hospital. Johanna Overton, 81, of Cheney, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016 in Spokane. Overton was born May 1, 1935 in Queens, N.Y. to August and Stephania Brendecke, young immigrants from Germany and Hungary, who later purchased a farm house in the Catskill Mountains and became longtime residents of Windham, N.Y. Ralph Quentin Johnson, 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Dec. 15, 2016. Ralph was born in Belle Fourche S.D. on July 30, 1931. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse until his father passed away unexpectedly at a young age. Ralph and his brother, Bob, had to help their mother run their 2,000-acre cattle ranch until it was sold 10 years later. Ralph later moved his family west to look for employment opportunities.
