East Valley double...

  • Kids offer insight if given opportunity

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2019

This week I had the privilege of eating lunch at a local middle school while working on a story. In the process, I talked to school officials and some students about what they were eating and the importance of a good meal during the school day. Over the course of my career I’ve talked to kids at sporting events, political rallies, domestic violence shelters and volunteer events. These conversations have led me to one conclusion, which I can look upon with absolute clarity. We don’t give kids enough credit. Children are con...

The focus at the West Plains Chamber of Commerce’s April 17 membership breakfast was ironically not the West Plains — instead, attendees heard from Spokane Mayor David Condon, who briefed visitors on the nearby city’s current projects and recent achievements. “The city of Spokane is a driving force in our region,” Chamber of Commerce executive director Toby Brommeling said. “That partnership is so important.” Condon shared advice for West Plains elected officials and business leaders and explained upcoming city goals, includ...

These meetings, typically introduced in a 20-minut...

Debra Nielson looks right at home settled on a vintage armchair in front of rows of brightly-patterned bolts of cotton and surrounded by crafts of her own making, including mittens made from repurposed sweaters and jewelry crafted from old spoons. And no wonder — she is the sole owner and operator of Ree Creations on 1st Street in Cheney, a small business that features local artists and carefully fashioned handcrafts, along with a surprising selection of fabric tucked into t...

  • Move to end the 'tyranny of the minority' fails

LEE HUGHES and SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporters|Updated Apr 18, 2019

Last month the state Senate defeated a bill that, if approved, would have placed a referendum on the November general election ballot asking voters to approve a constitutional amendment allowing a simple majority vote to pass local school district construction bonds levies. The failure of the state Senate to pass Joint Resolution 8201 compounds the ongoing and convoluted business of keeping schools operational for administrators. The state law that remains on the books requires a so-called “supermajority” of school dis...

West Plains residents traveling down Highway 2 in Airway Heights may have noticed significant construction in the area, but city officials say the project will be relatively short -lived. The Washington State Department of Transportation project is a safety improvement meant to restrict left turn movements in the corridor between Hayford and Deer Heights roads, except for a westbound left turn onto the northern properties near Starbucks and an eastbound left onto Hazelwood. “There was a motorcycle fatality there a few years a...

Spokane County Fire District 10 chief Nick Scharff is one of those rare firefighters who stays with one department their entire career. Now, after nearly 44 years, the end of that career is approaching with Scharff planning to retire in June. Scharff became a volunteer firefighter with Spokane County Fire District 10 (SCFD10) in 1976 when he was just 18. At that time, the department was dispatched via a phone tree. “A dispatcher who worked from their own home would call y...

The contamination of much of the West Plains’ water supply via firefighting foam may have been revealed two years ago, but to many local residents the problems it brought have only grown worse with time. Air Force officials have sampled 369 private drinking wells on the West Plains, and 89 have tested above a 2016 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) health advisory of 70 parts per trillion, though Fairchild Air Force Base (FAFB) leaders have not released exact locations o...
