    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 2, 2018

There are probably not any apologies coming from the hosts of the Medical Lake Summer Fest basketball tournament staged July 27 – 29. The Cardinal girls won their varsity bracket with a 40-27 win over Columbia River and the Medical Lake boys varsity team were runners up to Cashmere following a 59-51 loss in the title game. The Medical Lake girls are the defending Northeast A League champions and made their second consecutive strip to the 1A state tournament last winter. B...

  • Here's to bars, beers, cocktail napkins and all the great ideas that emerge

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 2, 2018

I always knew that many ideas — possibly even a few good and some even great ones —are hatched over a beer or two or more? Problem is the bar napkins get wet, the ink runs and memories somehow fade unless somehow the voice texting is engaged on the iPhone. Sure enough, mentalfloss.com has a list and it’s pretty impressive. In 1966, Rollin King owned a small commuter air service in San Antonio, Texas and had been discussing the idea of a commuter service between San Anton...

  • County construction at Craig/SR902

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Aug 2, 2018

The corner of State Route 902 and Craig Road has been a busy place lately when it comes to construction projects. Hidden behind a berm and sunken into a former gravel pit on the southeast corner of the intersection, Spokane County has been in the process of constructing what it calls the Craig Road Shop and Herbicide Building. The $2.9 million project is moving towards a targeted completion at the end of November....

  • Residents allege Harvest Bluff swales built incorrectly

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 2, 2018

In citizen comments at the July 24 Cheney City Council meeting, Harvest Bluff housing resident Dana Greenwood voiced displeasure over swales in her neighborhood that were retaining water and asked what the city planned to do to help. “They are not built correctly,” Greenwood contends. She wants the city to intervene and require developer Hayden Homes to make sure that the stormwater catch basins are fixed before the development — now in its fourth and final phase — is finishe...

  • Media to Trump: 'You're just so mean'

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 2, 2018

One of the many scripts that recycle themselves and play out randomly these days in the media is how they are treated so horribly by President Donald Trump. Those poor 90-pound weaklings are constantly getting bullied and having sand kicked in their face by that big guy with the bad comb-over of yellow hair. Yeah right, those who buy ink by the barrel, newsprint in box cars and rule so much of the airwaves cry foul when someone takes issue with “reporting” that is pretty muc...

  • Rascal Rodeo provides 'can-do' experience

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 26, 2018

Over three dozen members of the special needs community in the area had their special day prior to the final performance of the 51st annual Cheney Rodeo on July 15. The Rascal Rodeo made its appearance at the Bi Mart Arena just before the sun began to seriously bake the dirt and the smiles were easy to spot - from participants, parents and caregivers. The Rascal Rodeo idea is that of Tri-Cities resident Ann-Erica Whitemarsh. At an early age she befriended a Down Syndrome boy....

  • Amazon makes it all official

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 26, 2018

Arguably one of the worst-kept secrets in the local business world charged into the open last Friday. That’s when Amazon pulled the thinly-veiled curtain back on Project Rose, now officially known as the online giant’s latest fulfillment center which will be built along Interstate 90 and Geiger Blvd. A massive earth moving project has been in progress at the site for over a month for what will ultimately be a four-story, 2.5 million square-foot facility, initially tar...

  • Medical Lake's 'Summer Fest' scratches that basketball itch

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 19, 2018

The sounds of basketballs bouncing will be more pronounced at this year's second annual Summer Fest tournament at Medical Lake High School. The school's boys head basketball coach Noel Hachtel hatched the idea to revive an event that went away. "It's similar to former head coach Arnold Brown's Cardinal Classic," Hachtel explained. That's the one-time, week-long tournament Brown took with him when left for the Yakima Valley two summers ago. It's a small-scale version of what...

  • What'll it be, good stewards or bad slumlords?

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 12, 2018

Peering across seemingly endless miles of forestland from the rim of Oregon’s Crater Lake can certainly take one’s breath away. But so can stories and statistics about when that green turns to grey after the invasion of wildfire. That thought occurred last week while returning to civilization following the better part of four days spent incommunicado on a rafting adventure on the Rogue River in southwestern Oregon. As soon as the cell service kicked in and the wave of pus...
