  • Eastern opens new hockey season vs. Idaho

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 20, 2018

After a half-dozen seasons of playing against teams that few fans knew, and one’s that because of a talent gap routinely roughed up Eastern Washington University’s feathers, the Eagles are back in familiar territory for the school’s hockey program. Eastern will host the University of Idaho in a pair of games Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22, at the University Recreation Center, with both night’s opening faceoffs taking place at 7 p.m. The U of I games are nonleag...

  • Farmen, Oliver fuel Cards' soccer win

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 20, 2018

As predicted, senior defender Jaxyn Farmen was going to find a role in the offense for her Medical Lake girls soccer team. And it was Farmen who provided all the goals in the Cardinals lone win last week, a 3-2 victory over Newport on Sept. 13 in a Northeast A League contest. Medical Lake (1-2 Northeast A, 1-4 overall) opened the week with a 4-0 NEA loss to Freeman (3-0, 4-0) and finished with a 4-0 setback to Pullman (1-3-1) in a nonleague game. “The Newport game was d...

  • Shorthanded Cards fare well at Seaport

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 20, 2018

Medical Lake’s boy and girls cross country teams got some stellar efforts last Saturday at the Seaport Classic in Clarkston, Wash. Running against a field of a number of bigger schools, the Cardinal boys repeated their 2017 runner-up finish to Idaho 5A Lewiston and finished a point ahead of 2A Pullman on the three-mile Beachview Park course. Medical Lake’s girls, competing with a makeshift lineup since their top two runners were not at the meet, were fifth-place fin...

  • Back for more?

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Led by quarterback Gage Gubrud who was making his first start, the Eagles stunned the Cougars 45-42 back on Sept. 3, 2016 at Martin Stadium. The Eagles and Cougars meet Sept. 15 in a rematch. This is only the fifth game in a series that began over a century ago and heavily favored Washington State College in its infancy where they won 46-0 in 1907 and 73-0 a year later. The series went dormant until 2012 when Wazzu had to have a stout defensive stand to escape with a 24-20... Full story

  • Cards volleyball finishes week strong

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Nothing like testing one’s self right at the start. That’s what the Medical Lake volleyball team did last week as they jumped into the deep end of the Northeast A League pool and faced perennial power Lakeside in Suncrest, losing in straight sets 25-8, 25-8, 25-12. “For our first league meeting we played one of the toughest teams in the league,” head coach Todd Harr wrote in an email. “The team played solid despite what the scores may dictate, we were out-sized and our offen...

  • Medical Lake has impressive Highlander Invite finishes

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Medical Lake's defending 1A boys cross country state champions got a preliminary glimpse at the Highlander Invitational last Saturday of how things might look as they seek to add another trophy to the case in November. Head coach Gene Blankenship likes what he sees so far, albeit too early to have a firm idea. "I thought the kids ran pretty well," Blankenship said. "Right now it looks like we might be a little stronger than Lakeside or Riverside." In an event that drew dozens...

  • It never gets old watching Kupp on the field

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Finally, I had a reason to tune into Monday Night Football and it was nothing more complex than the opportunity to watch Cooper Kupp on one side and John Gruden on the other. Kupp’s Rams prevailed over Gruden’s Raiders 33-13 in the much-ballyhooed return of “Chucky” to Oakland as head coach. Gruden was on the sidelines of the team for the first time since his departure to Tampa Bay in 2002. Somehow a 10-year, $100-million salary was sufficient to lure the 55-year-old stoic G...

  • Eagles, Cougs go at it in Pullman

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Eastern Washington returns to the scene of the crime - their theft of perhaps the biggest football win in program history - Saturday, shooting to make it two stunners in a row over Washington State at Martin Stadium in Pullman. Led by quarterback Gage Gubrud who was making his first start, the Eagles stunned the Cougars 45-42 back on Sept. 3, 2016. This is only the fifth game in a series that began over a century ago and heavily favored Washington State College in its infancy...

The Medical Lake Cardinals, under new head coach Jeremy Bahr, opened their 2018 football season falling to St. Maries, Idaho 42-20, Aug. 31 at Holliday Field. While the Cards have now lost 19 straight games, there was improvement on both offense and defense.... Full story

  • Leaving no doubt

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Sep 13, 2018

When we last visited the Eastern Washington Eagles football team in 2017 they were licking the wounds of having been left out of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. That helped the team craft a motto for 2018 to "leave no doubt," which they did by totally dismantling the NCAA Division II Central Washington Wildcats, 58-13 Sept. 1 at Roos Field.... Full story

  • What's behind the water tap?

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

A very non-descript building in Four Lakes, just off State Route 904, has within its walls a lot of responsibility. The block structure houses the behind-the-scenes work of the Four Lakes Water District No. 10 and Strathview Water District No. 16. With that comes the duty to deliver water for drinking, flushing and keeping lawns green - when appropriate. And much of that responsibility is shouldered by the water manager for both entities, Dan Dorshorst. While small and...

  • Medical Lake volleyball delivers wins at Davenport Tournament

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 6, 2018

Following their showing at the Davenport Tournament, there may be something to the old “three is a charm” adage. At least that is what third-year Medical Lake head volleyball coach Todd Harr might be thinking following his team coming away with a 2-1 record and his first match wins with the program. “Starting the season with two wins is what this team deserves and has earned throughout their hard work and dedication to this program,” Harr wrote in an email. “ I can honestly...

  • EWU, NAU clash in early showdown

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 6, 2018

Two of the teams that preseason pollsters think will vie for the Big Sky Conference football title will meet this Saturday, just two weeks into the season. Because of scheduling in the expansive Big Sky Conference, however, this game between Eastern Washington University and Northern Arizona at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff is considered nonconference. But while the game has no bearing on league standings, it could easily play a big part in possible playoff pairings come...

  • Medical Lake drops football opener to St. Maries

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 6, 2018

If there were pluses that could be extracted out of Medical Lake's 42-20 opening week football loss to the St. Maries, Idaho Lumberjacks in a game played at Holliday Field, consider these. The Cardinals put up the most points in any one game since their 2016 opener - a 29-24 loss to Kellogg - and they outscored a very solid Lumberjack team in the second half to do so. Now it's a matter of improving the start where, after holding the visitors to one first down in their initial...

  • Opening week of school goes smoothly in Medical Lake

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 6, 2018

Even on a day when there have been little changes over the summer, glitches seem to find their way into things when school doors swing open for the new year. But in Medical Lake, where significant changes were made to security measures at all schools, most everything went quite well last Wednesday, Aug. 29, for the first day of classes according to district officials. District Superintendent Tim Ames and Kim Headrick, director of teaching and learning, both made the rounds of...

  • Medical Lake High School fence project bid accepted

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 6, 2018

Following the shooting a year ago at Freeman High School, districts across the region put many new measures in place to try to make sure that event is not repeated. Among the physical improvements done locally in the Medical Lake School District are the installation of new security doors. But at Medical Lake High School, which has detached buildings on the north side of the campus that serve as classrooms, officials decided that the installation of a 6-foot security fence was...

  • Endeavors begins its mission in Medical Lake

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 6, 2018

The start of a school year means many new things lie ahead for students and staff. And for those at Endeavors, this is especially true. Endeavors you say? Just what is that? That is the new name for the former Medical Lake Alternative High School as the rebranding became official several days ago when new signage took the place of the old. "We'll always deal with the stigma of the word, 'alternative,'" school director Lyra McGirk said. That is a state-level description so...

  • Teacher contract ratification must wait

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 6, 2018

One of the Medical Lake School Board’s major action items on the agenda for their Aug. 28 meeting will just have to wait. But in the meantime, the board did a lot of unanimous “rubber stamping” of a variety of matters and heard numerous reports on the eve of the start of the 2018-19 school year. The big item on the agenda was board approval of a three-year collective bargaining agreement with certified staff. For Medical Lake, “On average it was 9.67 percent new money,...

  • Eastern, Central renew longtime rivalry

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 30, 2018

Decades before football games between Eastern Washington and Montana were marked on the calendar well in advance, their first and arguably the most notable rivals were the Central Washington Wildcats. While today's fans might look down their nose a bit, oldtimers recognize that when the Savages met the Wildcats on any sports field or court, it was largely the equivalent of war, waged 180 miles apart, sometimes twice a season in the old NAIA and Evergreen Conference days. Forme...

  • New Cards' grid coach is raring to go

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 30, 2018

There's excitement in Jeremy Bahr's voice as the Medical Lake alum gets ready for his dream job head coaching debut at his alma mater Friday night at Holliday Field. That's where his Cardinals take on St. Maries in a nonleague matchup in what he hopes is the beginning of a turnaround for a team that has not celebrated a victory in two seasons. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. when the 1-0 Lumberjacks, 47-14 winners over Kellogg visit to resume a series that the schools played for six...

  • ML area farmer chosen for national award from Bayer

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff reporter|Updated Aug 30, 2018

Jody Young spends long days dedicated to tending his land so it will produce crops to help feed the nation - and maybe the world. The Medical Lake area farmer's hard work and good fortune will allow a local club to get back on its feet and hopefully once again thrive. A recent news release reported that 10 charities each received a $5,000 donation as part of the Bayer Cereal Experts Grain for Good Sweepstakes. Young selected the Davenport 4-H Club as the recipient of the...

  • Update on tribute wall given to ML council

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 30, 2018

It's not often that the "Interested Citizens" part of the Medical Lake City Council meeting takes top billing, but in a relatively swiftly conducted Aug. 21 session that's exactly what happened. Terri Cooper of Re*Imagine Medical Lake brought the council up to date on plans that have been in the works for several months to bring the "Moving Wall" to town in 2019. That happens June 13 –17 in conjunction with next year's edition of Founder's Day, another production of R...

  • Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars earns $5,000 grant

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 23, 2018

Medical Lake’s Dollars for Scholars chapter received a $5,000 grant to augment the work it does in the community. Now comes time to figure out how volunteers can put that money into motion. Scholarship America is the parent organization to Dollars for Scholars affiliates across the country. This is one of only two grants awarded in the Pacific Northwest region but will need to be equally matched in order to add it to its already significant pool of money. Scholarship A...

  • Setting a bad national record

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 23, 2018

On Monday, Aug. 20, a news headline appeared on social media from local television stations that was worth a double-take. "Spokane air quality improves to unhealthy," it said. Quite an odd accomplishment to be the best of the worst. But in the span of 24 hours, as predicted by retired Eastern Washington University geography and meteorological professor Bob Quinn, the blue skies reappeared, kinda' at least, and the Pacific Northwest is on to much better air. And maybe an early...
