  • Goats' ground game rolls

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Nov 8, 2018

Last Friday's crossover football game between Medical Lake with visiting Chelan was seen as an opportunity for new faces to get real time experience. And that's just how things played out at wind-blown and chilly Holliday Field where the Mountain Goats put on a running clinic in scoring a 49-6 win over the Cardinals. While it was designed as a game where junior varsity players would have their opportunities, perhaps few figured they would have as many plays as they did when...

  • Cardinals 'turn over' football victory to Stags

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

It was one of those contests where the final score certainly did not indicate how really close this final Northeast A League football game was, or could have been. Deer Park's 41-13 win on Oct. 26 at Holliday Field that concluded the regular season for each team, got out of hand on three plays that yielded the Stags 20 points in all of about 30 seconds. Sean Hill's 53-yard interception return broke a scoreless tie with 6 minutes, 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter for...

  • Medical Lake volleyball makes, exits playoffs

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

It was a season where the Medical Lake volleyball program seemed to move from crawling baby to toddler, all in a matter of days. The Cardinals did the equivalent of going from pulling themselves up to the living room coffee table to bouncing across the room with abandon. That came by qualifying for their first Northeast A postseason in several years — doing it in style with a straight-sets win over Deer Park on Oct. 18. Then once in the district playoffs, they won an o...

  • Eastern Washington tries to stay perfect against Northern Colorado

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

Eastern Washington puts its perfect record of nine consecutive football wins in Big Sky Conference play against Northern Colorado on the line in Greeley this Saturday. The Eagles have yet to lose to the Bears since UNC joined the league in 2006. They will do that with a lock-tight defense that is as stingy as any in EWU football history, and an offense that appears to be blooming again under the guidance of quarterback Eric Barriere when the Eagles venture onto Nottingham...

  • Cardinals return to state cross country

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

The Medical Lake program that began by getting a couple of feet inside the door nine years ago, and over the last half-dozen seasons has become a dominant force in high school cross country in Washington state, will try to defend their 2017 crown this Saturday, Nov. 3 at Pasco. Using a gut-check finish where key runners overtook their opposition in the final 100 yards, the Cardinals earned a runner-up finish on the rainy fairways of the Chewelah Golf and Country Club and once...

Medical Lake High School band teacher Craig Johnson passed up being officially honored last Friday, Oct. 26 as that district's West Plains Chamber of Commerce "Educator of the Year" at the group's awards gala. Johnson chose instead to direct the band and a group of graduating seniors at the football game against Deer Park. Johnson's honor was announced at halftime while he was surrounded by band members....

  • Medical Lake School Board makes quick work of agenda

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 1, 2018

Maybe it was the urgency to get to watch game one of the 2018 World Series, but whatever the reason, the Medical Lake School Board was in and out of its Oct. 23 meeting in quick fashion, under 30 minutes. The board gave unanimous approval to a variety of policies and action items, as well as assigning diploma distribution duties to Ron Cooper and Felicia Jensen for the June 8, 2019 high school graduation exercise. Of note among the policies was No. 5252 dealing with keeping...

For the Cardinal girls, who did not qualify as one of only two team entries from the Northeast A League, they send freshman Allison Payne to the big race.... Full story

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2018

With a week’s rest behind them, Eastern Washington University’s football team returns to Roos Field for the first time in three weeks for the 92nd annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 12:05 p.m. for the game that is sold out, even with the addition of 600 additional bleacher seats. This will be the 29th consecutive sellout at Roos Field. But the opponents, the University of Idaho, have been away from Cheney for an even longer period of time, last playing in...

  • Powerful, daunting Colville pounds Medical Lake 58-7

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2018

Medical Lake head football coach Jeremy Bahr sensed going in that last Friday’s Northeast A League football game with Colville had some sort of ominous cloud hanging over it. “It was one of those things where the kids were ultra-intimidated by the history of playing these guys,” Bahr said after his team took a 58-7 pounding from the Indians. “Colville’s the real deal, there’s a reason why they’re ranked No. 2 in state.” Scoring in quick bunches, first four minutes into th...

  • Medical Lake collects volleyball playoff spot

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2018

The Medical Lake High School volleyball team knew exactly what it had to do to earn their first playoff berth for head coach Todd Harr, but they turned it all up a notch last Thursday on Senior Night. The Cardinals not only got the win they needed to qualify for the postseason, but they did it in dominating fashion with a 3-0 win over Deer Park, the first sweep for the program since 2015. Earlier in the week Medical Lake dropped a nonleague match to Mary Walker High School of...

  • Medical Lake charts course for state cross country

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2018

Among the many roads and pathways Medical Lake has taken on the way to winning multiple 1A boys state cross country championships, perhaps last week's was one of the more unique. "The course, first of all, runs through a cemetery," head coach Gene Blankenship said. "It does a two-loop thing. And signage along the way warns of both flower removal and closing times at dusk, which all the teams managed to beat." That's where the Cardinals wrapped up Northeast A League dual-meet...

  • Finally, a full city council in Medical Lake

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2018

For the first time in several months, the Medical Lake City Council had its full complement of members on hand to address the agenda for the Oct. 16 meeting. New appointee Don Kennedy sat on the council for the first time. City Administrator Doug Ross gave a report on the ongoing routine state audit that was taking place at City Hall. The audit will cost the city $19,000. The peek inside the finances of the city takes place as a conversion to new software has recently...
