Cheney's Jamel Chabot is in a race with the ball to home plate May 1 at North Central in the Blackhawks' final regular season Greater Spokane League baseball game at Ryne Sandberg Field. Chabot beat the throw and successfully completed a third inning inside-the-park home run giving the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. Cheney would eventually win 16-1 as the Blackhawks scored 13 runs in the top of the sixth inning to blow things open. Cheney won its final six games to finish 14-6...

  • Another painful loss for Cards at Colville

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated May 5, 2023

To some, baseball is the furthest thing from being a game of inches. There’s 90-feet between bases, it’s 60 feet, 6 inches from the pitcher’s mound to home plate and it generally takes a minimum of a 300-foot-plus shot to hit a home run. But for Medical Lake last week in a crucial Northeast A League game at Colville, the difference between a Cardinal victory and the eventual 6-5 walk-off win by the Crimson Hawks April 29 was mere inches. Earlier in the season Medical Lake...

SPOKANE – The shorthanded Medical Lake track team still made more history at the Mooberry Relays held April 22 at Rogers High School in Spokane. Named for Jack Mooberry, a hall-of-fame coach at Washington State from 1945-1973, the event features both track and field events and draws entrants of all sized schools from across the region. “It was an interesting day, unfortunately it is our prom night so we got there with maybe half of our team,” head Coach Gene Blankenship said....

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Apr 27, 2023

CHENEY – The girls fastpitch softball team crafted a two-game winning streak and has won four of its last five outings through April 21, doing so in some dramatic fashion. Rebounding from a 13-0 rout at the hands of Mount Spokane April 18, the Blackhawks crafted an improbable win over Ferris, 16-15, April 20 before finishing the week with a 14-9 victory at Lewis and Clark April 21 in Grater Spokane League play. Mia Ashcroft drove in the winning run with a walk-off single as p...

  • Cardinals craft memorable gem for win

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Apr 27, 2023

MEDICAL LAKE – There might be plenty to forget about since the Medical Lake baseball team returned from spring break and they’ve lost five of the last six Northeast A League games. But that lone win might just stand out not just this season, but may be reflected upon for years to come? The past week saw the Cardinals lose at Freeman 11-8, April 18 and split with Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), winning 1-0 before losing 9-1 in the second game, April 22. In that opener at Hol...

    Paul Delaney|Updated Apr 27, 2023

Cheney's senior keeper Austin Benson made this first-half save on a breakaway try by Gonzaga Prep's Vettle Harbuz in a Greater Spokane League match played April 19. The effort preserved a scoreless tie, but not for long as the Bullpups scored three first-half goals on the way to a 5-0 win...

  • Others getting into ML record mood

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Apr 20, 2023

Decades of experience has provided Medical Lake head track coach Gene Blankenship with very solid insight on his teams. So, it came a little bit by surprise when his teams snuck away from a Northeast A League meet in Deer Park on April 12 with an unexpected victory. His Cardinal boys and girls each defeated host Deer Park, but not Freeman, as Blankenship had thought might happen. Freeman won easily, 101-43 on the boys’ side but Medical Lake edged Deer Park 76-67. F...

  • Medical Lake sweeps Reardan in baseball

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Apr 14, 2023

Medical Lake baseball was the lone West Plains team to have not taken a rest from competition during spring break, playing a non-league doubleheader against Reardan April 5. In a pair of games originally scheduled to be played at Holliday Field in Medical Lake, but moved due to poor playing conditions, the Cardinals swept both contests against the 2B Screaming Eagles 15-1 and 9-2. Played in swirling 30 mile-per-hour winds, the games saw Medical Lake win the first with a fast...

  • Eight returnees boost CHS softball

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Apr 14, 2023

When Gary Blake first accessed his Blackhawks’ fast pitch softball team there were a great deal of unknowns. As he started his 20th season at the helm of the program Blake had yet to see his team on the field, nor did he even know what final numbers might look like. Now approaching the halfway point in the season and primed for the stretch run following spring break, there’s much more clarity. Back in late February there were 55 players on his list. But not all of those act...

  • Ramsey's record roll continues at Wolf Invite

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Apr 6, 2023

DEER PARK - The record-setting streak for Kyla Ramsey of Medical Lake continued, this time under far from ideal conditions at the Glenn Wolf Invite on March 31. The senior distance runner, who set a decades-old school mark in the 1,600 meters at the Ray Cockrum Relays on March 25 in Wenatchee, struck again with a best in the 3,200. Competing in what Coach Gene Blankenship termed "questionable conditions" of wind and rain, Ramsey's 11 minutes, 23.31 seconds broke what was a...

  • Cheney streak halted by G-Prep

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Apr 6, 2023

SPOKANE — Cheney’s undefeated start of the 2023 baseball season has come to an end, but the Blackhawks may have just started a new one. After starting with seven consecutive wins, and going 5-0 in Greater Spokane League play, Cheney lost its first game 7-6, on March 31 at Gonzaga Prep. The Blackhawks later split an April 3 doubleheader at Central Valley, losing 7-3 before winning the second game 2-1. At Gonzaga Prep, the Blackhawks’ win streak came to an end on a nasty weath...

It’s now all business for Medical Lake baseball following the conclusion of their 2023 pre-season with a 3-3 record. The Cardinals used a doubleheader sweep of 2A Rogers of the Greater Spokane League as a final tune-up prior to the start of league play this week. Medical Lake defeated Rogers 12-4 and 14-3 on March 21 at Holliday Field where head coach Austin Sharp got one final shot to tinker on a few things. In the definition of playing “small ball” — the art of placing...

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Mar 30, 2023

The Medical Lake track team returned from the Ray Cockrum Relays in Wenatchee with a number of personal records but one set of very special numbers. Cardinals' senior distance runner Kayla Ramsey broke the school's 28-year record for the 1,600 meters, March 25 at Wenatchee High School. As the senior crossed the finish line ahead of a trio of other local competitors in a time of 5 minutes, 18.51 seconds she eclipsed the long-held mark of Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame member...

  • Cheney boys' tennis continues to rebuild

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Mar 23, 2023

If Dan Estock can transfer his passion for the game of tennis into what happens on the courts for the Cheney High School boys’ team the Greater Spokane League might watch out. In his third year guiding the program after taking over for long-time coach Jessie Erickson, Estock is working trying to build things back after the toll COVID-19 took on his program. And Erickson has been there every step it seems. “He’s a pretty fantastic guy to have on your side,” Estock said. ...

  • Continuity is plus for Cheney girls tennis

    Paul Delaney, Contributor|Updated Mar 23, 2023

The learning curve was a bit rough in 2022 for then first-year Cheney girls’ tennis coach Linnea Love. With victories that could be counted on one hand, Love, who played in the Greater Spokane League at Lewis and Clark — later in college before returning home — knows the scales tilt towards Spokane. “It’s been challenging because the teams we play are a lot more competitive,” Love said. That’s mainly a matter of resources such as numbers and facilities. “There’s more...

  • It's a numbers game, again, for Cardinals

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Mar 16, 2023

MEDICAL LAKE - Building things is second nature to Medical Lake baseball coach Austin Sharp. Because when he's not teaching the game, Sharp is in the construction business where from time to time he likely has to improvise. That is the perfect skill required for Cardinal baseball which is regularly short on players. "Right now, our numbers are about as low as I've ever had them," Sharp said. "We've got 26 signed up, but my upper classes are just very light. I have five total k...

  • Cardinal track chips off rust at Ike

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Mar 16, 2023

MEDICAL LAKE — Leave it to Medical Lake’s track team to get the jump on other spring sports which have been shackled by a seemingly unrelenting winter. The Cardinals had to travel to Yakima to run and jump, competing at the Eisenhower High School Jamboree, March 11, but doing so with some notable successes. “Despite the fact that we have not been able to practice much outside, we had several excellent performances,” head coach Gene Blankenship wrote in a Facebook post. The non-scoring event produced a pair of victori...
