A favorite for the 2018 Big Sky Conference football championship and the defending co-champions meet Saturday at Roos Field as Eastern Washington and Southern Utah clash with a 12:10 p.m. kickoff. Last year in Cedar City, a second-half meltdown led to a 46-28 loss to the Thunderbirds, the first of what would be two consecutive losses to the Big Sky’s Utah teams. The following week, Eastern lost at home to Weber State 28-20 in what essentially proved to be a big reason why t...
Medical Lake High School’s volleyball team saw its losing streak extend to three following a 3-0 Northeast A League loss to Deer Park in their lone outing last week on Sept. 25. “This was a tough-played and hard-fought match,” head coach Todd Harr wrote in an email. “We battled throughout the night and came up just short in a couple of sets,” losing 25-18, 28-26 and 25-20. Megan Goertz had a solid night leading both teams in assists (15) while Tori John led in kills (3) again...
Eastern Washington delivered a 70-17 smackdown of Cal Poly last Saturday in their Big Sky Conference opener in Cheney. The Eagles' win over the Mustangs at Roos Field was a game that seemed out of character for Eastern, at least in the last decade. In a program known for its passing prowess, Eastern's rushing offense doubled its passing attack for the first time in 14 years when the Eagles rushed for the second-most yards in school history. The total of 441 is second only to... Full story

The last thing Medical Lake head girls soccer coach Zane Higgins needed was injuries on his already thin roster. But that was the case last week where the Cardinals lost a pair of Northeast A League matches, 5-1 at Riverside on Sept. 18 and 6-0 at home to Colville, Sept. 20. Medical Lake (1-4 NEA, 1-6 overall) did earn a nonleague win, 7-0 against Kettle Falls last Saturday. “Injuries are taking a toll,” Higgins said. “We played games on Tuesday and Thursday with only a coupl...
Members of the Medical Lake High School cheerleading squad organized a junior camp for area kids who were able to show off what they learned at halftime of the Cardinals football game last Friday against Dayton-Waitsburg. Everyone had a lot to cheer about following Medical Lake's 44-0 win. The Cardinals are home this Friday at Holliday Field for a Northeast A League game with Freeman at 7 p.m....
Despite lacking one of their top runners, the Medical Lake girls cross country team collected a notable victory in the 1A division of the Connell Invitational last Saturday in the Columbia Basin. Medical Lake’s boys were also strong with their 29-32 loss to the hosts as the Cardinals continue to prepare for the regular season which begins Oct. 3. “My freshman girl (Allison Payne) just ran her head off,” head coach Gene Blankenship said. ML won the girls title despite the a...
Medical Lake head volleyball coach Todd Harr summed up his team’s winless week of play in the Northeast A League quite simply. “As a whole this last week we lost our identity a bit as a team,” Harr wrote in an email, leading to a pair of 3-0 losses, to Riverside on Sept. 18 on the road and to Colville at home Sept. 20. In their 28-26, 25-16, 25-9 loss to the Rams (1-5 NEA, 3-5 overall) the inability to find either offensive or defensive consistency was a determining facto...
Eastern Washington travels to a place to play football this Saturday where they have enjoyed some pretty good success over the years, but one where a few wrenches have been thrown into the gears. The No. 5-ranked Eagles face Montana State in Bozeman's Bobcat Stadium in a battle of 3-1 teams who both had big wins in their conference openers the week before. Eastern comes off a 70-17 smackdown of Cal Poly last Saturday in their Big Sky Conference opener in Cheney. MSU,...
Medical Lake used a fast start to get the lead, then relied on a staunch defense to seal the school's first football victory in over two years, topping visiting 2B Dayton-Waitsburg 44-0 in a nonleague game last Friday at Holliday Field. "We've been talking about it since I was hired, learning to win and get over that hump." The win ended a 21-game losing streak...

For the third time in the past several months a series of brush fires broke out along a stretch of Interstate 90 on Monday, Sept. 24, threatening evacuations at one point in the afternoon. The origin appeared to be at Exit 272, State Route 902, with additional fires strung along the eastbound shoulder of the freeway. The wind-driven fire stretched nearly 5 miles to the Geiger exit, charring 63 acres. Spokane County Fire District 3 Division Chief Deb Dodson said the cause is,...
Two years ago the Eastern Washington University Eagles stunned the Washington State Cougars 45-42 in a huge upset football win in 2016. Wazzu was certainly not going to let that happen again as the Cougs started fast -- leading 21-3 -- and finished strong outscoring the Eagles 24-0 in the fourth quarter on the way to a 59-24 nonconference victory.... A basic math lesson shows that a high school football game is 48 minutes long. Perhaps that’s the drill Medical Lake head football coach Jeremy Bahr needs to impart this week — along with the traditional Xs and Os — to help put an end to his team’s losing streak that has now reached 21 games over the past three seasons. The latest setback, 21-7 at Lakeside last Friday, their Northeast A League opener, was close to a carbon-copy of the team’s loss the previous week, 27-7 at O...
Medical Lake head volleyball coach Todd Harr can check off yet another preseason goal for his team. A 3-1 win over visiting Newport last Thursday, Sept. 13, ended a winless streak in Northeast A League play dating back to Oct. 27, 2015, a string of 31 consecutive matches following a 3-0 loss to Freeman on Sept. 11. The last NEA victory for Medical Lake happened against Riverside, 3-1. The Cardinals (1-2 Northeast A, 1-4 overall) broke the 1-1 tie by winning the final two...
Stung by the 524 passing yards of Washington State's "Air Raid" offense in the Cougars' 59-24 nonconference football win over Eastern Washington last Saturday in Pullman, this week the Eagles need to make significant changes to prepare for the visit of the option football-centered Cal Poly Mustangs. The two teams kick off at 1 p.m. in the Big Sky Conference opener for both at Roos Field, with Cal Poly featuring fullback Joe Protheroe, who rumbled for 228 yards on 43 carries...
What is it that prompts people to toss their bag of fast food garbage along the side of the road for someone else to clean up, and not just on the passenger side floorboard for disposal at home in the trash can? Or what was it that made it right for someone to chuck car parts along the Centennial Trail in Spokane Valley? Worse yet, and incredibly sad, how was the river the place to dispose of a dead female body that a rafter discovered Sept. 15 while participating in a...
This Eastern Washington University football fan was all in with his support of the Eagles last Saturday in Pullman. But there was not much anyone could do to stem the “Air Raid” offense that dismantled Eastern 59-24 at Martin Stadium....
With the start of fall this Saturday, Sept. 22, winter certainly will be here before we know it. And this season it will be officially fueled by a tepid El Nino pattern, noted for its slightly higher than normal sea surface temperatures that tend to also deliver a tad warmer winter in the lowlands. "El Nino is back, but very weak," retired Eastern Washington University meteorology and geography professor, Dr. Bob Quinn said. As he's noted previously, the northern reaches of th...
