  • Dirt Dawgs filling the gap

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Jun 5, 2024

There are several cogs in the machine that propels baseball’s recent success in the area, most notable the West Plains Little League. But a new addition arrived in 2020 that has helped fill the middle school gap, that being the Medical Lake Dirt Dawgs. The idea of a program that reaches primarily ages 13 to 15 jumped into founder Lance Michaud’s mind after he arrived in Medical Lake with the U.S. Air Force in 2019. A former college player, Michaud landed at Fairchild as its Food Superintendent and was surprised at what he...

Leadoff batter Dawes Hanson was hit by a pitch and Nolan McKinnon wal...

  • Cannons start off strong

PAUL DELANEY, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 31, 2024

West Plains Cannons' head Coach Austin Sharp was initially somewhat worried about knitting together the various pieces of his roster from several different schools for his AAA American Legion Baseball team. After four games the parts seem to be blending well and holding together just fine. A 6-2 Memorial Day win over the Spokane Bandits at Hart Field moved the team to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Spokane ALB standings. "I think the offense will come as everybody gets comfortable...

TACOMA — Following their appearance at the state 3A state championships last weekend in Tacoma, Blackhawks track and field athletes appear to have a bright future according to he’d coach Derek Slaughter. Cheney had podium appearances from four boys and three girls prompting Slaughter to observe in an email, “This year turned out to be a better year for the Blackhawks at state.” Senior Eugene Hennequin had the Blackhawks’ highest finish with a third in the long jump. His 23-foot, 1.25-inch effort trailed the 24-1.25 of Josiah...

PAUL DELANEY, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 29, 2024

YAKIMA — Medical Lake track and field may not have earned any individual titles but they returned from the state 1A meet in Yakima with something else. An experience for team members who could possibly return in 2025 but did not qualify in 2024. “I took them because I want them to have state experience so that we be ready for next year,” head coach Gene Blankenship said. The Cardinals took five athletes to Eisenhower High School where senior Chiche Okemgbo landed the lone podium appearance with her third place in the shot...

  • My oh my, the Owyhee!

PAUL DELANEY, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 23, 2024

Its name comes from the most unlikely source. The solitude that surrounds it is immense. And the ever-changing river corridor scenery is, perhaps, unparalleled? A just right El Niño winter weather pattern where the storm track punishes California sometimes rewards whitewater rafters with both perfect water and weather on Oregon’s Owyhee River. Flowing 280 miles, the headwaters of this river originate in northern Nevada with the Owyhee’s name derived from an original spel...

  • Cardinals send six to state meet

PAUL DELANEY, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 23, 2024

YAKIMA - Medical Lake is sending six athletes to the state 1A track meet at Zaepfel Stadium this weekend. But it could have been a bigger number, lamented head Coach Gene Blankenship following the District 7 meet May 17 and 18 at Riverside High School. The Top 2 finishers from each event qualified to compete at Eisenhower High School's Zaepfel, but had a state qualifying number been attained they, too, would have been able to attend. As it stands the Cardinal girls are...

  • Cheney baseball ousted in playoffs

PAUL DELANEY, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 22, 2024

CHENEY - The Cheney Blackhawks were playing some pretty good baseball recently, just not good enough to extend their season. Cheney (10-14) was ousted from postseason May 11 following a 9-6 loss in district play to Mount Spokane where they were unable to quell the Greater Spokane League co-champ Wildcats. A five-run fifth did in the Blackhawks who were led by Clayton Wood's two hits and three RBIs. That game followed Cheney's 7-0 win over University earlier in the day where...

  • Cheney tracksters off to state

PAUL DELANEY, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 22, 2024

CHENEY — There will be plenty of cheering to be done for Cheney athletes during this week’s state 2A, 3A and 4A track and field championships at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School. The Blackhawks are represented in a dozen events following District 8 championships staged last week at Central Valley High School. “We had a better year at districts this year,” head coach Derek Slaughter wrote in an email. “It wasn’t 100 degrees and we had one more allocation for state.” The Greater Spokane League — a.k.a. District 8 — was...

PAUL DELANEY, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 13, 2024

MEDICAL LAKE - Just what are most 80-somethings doing regularly these days other than probably making sure their meds are in order? Likely not what Gene Blankenship and Gary Blake do? Both currently spend large parts of the days fueling their passion as coaches molding better young people. Blankenship, the senior of the pair at 82 guides the track and cross-country programs at Medical Lake High School. Blake, who just turned 80 in April, has coached Cheney softball since...
