The West Plains Cannons surely could have folded following Saturday's first game in the Washington State American Legion Baseball state tournament in Port Angeles. Yakima Pepsi Pak's Garrett Leon hit a walk-off grand slam home run that erased a 2-1 Cannons' lead in the bottom of the seventh and delivered his team a 5-2 win. But through games of July 29, the Cannons have played themselves back into contention for a long-sought title. With wins of 7-2 over Mt. Spokane on July...
As if an already troubled sport needed yet another poke in the eye and a whack to the shins. That would be unlimited hydroplane racing which limps away from the Columbia River last Sunday. The already slim roster of race boats was reduced even more following the unplanned demolition derby of the Apollo Columbia Cup in the Tri Cities. Eight of the exotic race boats arrived last week raring to go on the always exceedingly fast racecourse. Except low water in the northwest portion of the course forced officials to shrink the...
TAMPA, Fla. -Going into his final season at Eastern Washington, Efton Chism III is getting used to the national attention. Chism was included in the East-West Shrine Bowl's top 1,000 NFL prospects in the lead up to the 2024 college football season. The list intends to highlight the best players who are both eligible for the annual all-star game and ready for the NFL. The East-West Shrine Bowl is scheduled for January 30, 2025 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with 130...
A troubling pattern faced the Medical Lake Dirt Dawgs when they were set to meet the Walla Walla Griz in the opening game of the American Legion Single-A state tournament in Yakima. The Dirt Dawgs lost twice earlier in the season to the Griz, 11-10 and 8-7, both within three days at the Gonzaga Prep Tournament in June — each in disappointing walk-off fashion. Medical Lake, however, turned the tables on Walla Walla, July 27, claiming a 5-4 victory. They did it scoring the winning run in the bottom of the first extra inning ...
CHENEY — A new era for Eastern Washington men’s basketball has begun as head coach Dan Monson enters his first season leading the Eagles. Monson announced the full schedule for the 2024-25 season, with 14 home games. The Big Sky officially announced the conference schedule for all its affiliated members earlier. Eastern’s regular season begins on Nov. 4 with a road test against Colorado, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. EWU’s home opener is slated for Nov. 6 against Seattle. A highlig...
The West Plains Cannons will make what could be an unprecedented fourth consecutive trip to the Washington State American Legion state playoffs following their third place finish last week in district play. The Cannons finished 3-1 in pool play with wins 12-0 over Pullman and 6-5 in nine innings against the NE 49ers from Chewelah, July 18. They followed July 20 with a 6-5 loss to Mt. Spokane and then a rematch with the 49ers and a 3-0 win. Gonzaga Prep earned the top district...
MEDICAL LAKE – Perhaps the old saying about the third time being the charm will play out for the Medical Lake Dirt Dawgs in the American Legion state A tournament? Heading to state for a third consecutive year, ML faces the Walla Walla Griz in the opener, July 27 at 1 p.m. They are looking to win their first game against that team this s...

CHENEY - With fall camp nearly a week away, Eastern Washington football has added motivation for the 2024 season. The Big Sky conference released the preseason coaches' and media poll, with the Eagles listed at eighth and sixth respectively. Montana was picked to win the conference in both the coaches' and media poll. UC Davis running back Lan Larison was picked to win Big Sky offensive MVP and Montana State defensive lineman Brody Grebe was picked for defensive MVP. Also,...
It was just 10 years ago that Vernon Adams Jr. was skittering around the red turf at Roos Field at Eastern Washington University making a name for himself. As the head mechanic of the Eagles’ high-powered offensive engine, Adams helped lead the Eagles to three consecutive Big Sky Conference championships and as many Football Championship Subdivision semifinal playoff appearances. Adams was passing and running his way to earning the nickname of “Big Play V.A.” with highl...

SPOKANE - Tournament time this past week for the West Plains Cannons proved to be a perfect place for some experimentation. As hosts of a pod in the American Legion Wood Bat Classic the Cannons of course set sights on winning not only their bracket but playing for the title as well. The tinkering head coach Austin Sharp drew up nearly worked as West Plains advanced to the first round of elimination play, losing to eventual tournament runner-up, the Billings Scarlets, 3-1 on...
CHENEY – Back in the 1960s roller derby was televised into our homes and seemed hugely popular. Viewing the Bay Area Bombers on a snowy black and white TV broadcast comes to mind. And every so often they'd do a barnstorming tour and be live at the old Spokane Coliseum. The sport makes an appearance again Saturday, July 13 at 3 p.m. in of all places Cheney and at the Eastern Washington University Recreation Center ice rink - minus the ice of course. While it will not be your g...
POST FALLS, Idaho – Winners of three in a row and 8-of-10 propel the Medical Lake Dirt Dawgs into the concluding of the regular season. The Dirt Dawgs opened July with a 7-4 loss to the Northern Lakes Mountaineers at Holliday Field. They erupted with big bats to win the next three, 11-5 over the Prairie Gold Cardinals (July 2) and a doubleheader sweep, 15-0 and 17-3, over the North Idaho Lakers Juniors on July 8. “We’ve had a few players that have been working really hard to get some playing time,” head coach Lance Michaud wr...

Five runs in both fifth and sixth and sixth innings put this one in the books early. Trey Sloan contributed at the plate, going 3-for-4 and on the mound with a complete game, five-strikeout outing. Kurt Schmitt, Blahne Schuman and Cooper Weed each had two RBIs. Scoring in bunches — fiv...
CHENEY – The Summer Hawks faced off twice last week against the Spokane Valley Titans who won both times. A pair of three-run innings in both the third and fifth innings allowed the Spokane Valley Titans to erase an early 2-0 Cheney Summer Hawks lead enroute to a 9-4 win, July 2 in Cheney. In a return match in Spokane, July 8, Spokane scored its only runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 2-0 victory. T.J. Weindeman pitched to all but one batter in the seven-inning game....
VANCOUVER, B.C.- For a second consecutive week and third time in four games, former Eastern Washington University quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has been named the Canadian Football League’s Honor Roll All-Week selection. Adams Jr., the CFL’s passing leader, went 26-of-36 for 383 yards and a season-high four touchdown passes as the offense racked up 482 net yards in the Lions’ 44-28 victory at Hamilton. Adams Jr. put together a passer efficiency rating of 143.6 remains on pace to crack the 6,000-yard mark. Adams played at EW...
Cheney wins pair in AA COEUR D’ALENE — Cheney Summer Hawks hit a 2-0 week following wins of 4-3 over the CDA Lums at Thorco Field on June 28. Game two was an easier journey as Cheney scored in the first four innings including a five-run fourth that made this a 10-run rule five-inning game. Summer Hawks finish 1-2 CHENEY — The Cheney Single-A Summer Hawks sandwiched an 18-1 win around a pair of losses last week, 15-11 to G-Prep (June 24) and 16-2 against Mead (June 27). MEDICAL LAKE — They accomplished what is maybe most important but the West Plains Cannons fell just short of, perhaps, their prefect week. A June 25 sweep of the Mount Spokane Wild clinched a third consecutive Spokane AAA regular season title and top seeding in regional play that leads to state for the Cannons. Later in the week, West Plains played for the championship in the Pepsi Pak Tournament in Selah, but could not find an answer for the CDA Lumbermen who beat them twice. Taylor Oliver’s one-out single drove home Bra...
The old-fashioned sound of the crack of wood baseball bats will echo across the area starting today, July 4. This means American Legion baseball will be right around the corner virtually everywhere from Coeur d’Alene to Hillyard and Millwood and of course Medical Lake. “They are playing on 15 fields at 14 different sites,” Legion Baseball official Glen Reser noted. “Post Falls has two pods/fields,” he added. SPOKANE — Following four wins to open the season, the Cheney Single-A Summer Hawks find themselves looking for that original recipe. Cheney lost a pair of games, one highlighted by pitching, 3-2 loss on June 20 to Lakeside and the other a 19-12 slugfest defeat to East Valley, June 22. Lakeside pushed across runs in both the sixth and seventh innings with the winning score coming on an error, one of five committed by the Summer Hawks. An additional runner, however, was cut down at the plate trying to steal home. Cheney had a...
CHENEY — It was just seven games in five days. But last week’s schedule for the West Plains Cannons AAA American Legion team has head coach Austin Sharp feeling it was much longer. A yawn in the middle of an interview provided perfect punctuation. The Spokane ALB league leaders maintained that status with a pair of victories over Chewelah, 5-4 and 5-3 on June 18 and kept the Cannons a perfect 10-0 and with a 1 1/2 game lead over Mount Spokane. (The Cannons played the Wild in a pair of games June 25.) “Cy Reeves pitched that...
