    An additional alternative to the trick-or-treat rounds is coming to Airway Heights this Halloween. Airway Heights’ Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with the Sunset Elementary parent-teacher organization for the first annual “trunk-or-treat” event.     The past summer has been an incredible time for charitable giving in the Spokane region. First, Saturday, Sept. 29, Dutch Bros gave $1 from every $2 medium drink toward Cat Davis, a 25-year-old Spokane resident suffering from scleroderma. A second fundraiser was held just last week for Davis where all of the area Papa Murphy’s locations donated $3 from every family size pizza purchase.   • Dry goods needed at Medical Lake Food Bank

    The Medical Lake Food Bank is facing a dry goods shortage, which has lasted for the past several weeks. While the organization is doing well with other products, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, the amount of shelf-stable items has been decreasing on a weekly basis. Another extension of the city’s emergency moratorium on mixed-use building applications was passed, and will last until Dec. 3.     Annexations in Airway Heights this year have altered the way the city approached its budget for 2013 and were discussed in a public hearing at the Monday, Oct. 15 meeting of the Airway Heights City Council. A large amount of land was annexed east of Hayford Road to Deer Heights Road, in coordination with the city of Spokane. As a result, the city’s revenues had a slight change compared to 2012.     Grant-funded safe routes around Sunset Elementary in Airway Heights are on hold until next year. City Planner Derrick Braaten said bids for the project came back $65,000 over the engineer’s estimate, and were put on hold until next year, with the hope of a lower bid.     Spokane Transit Authority presented its long-term plans for regional transportation, which includes creating easier access to Medical Lake, at the Oct. 2 meeting of the Medical Lake City Council. The plan includes upgrading the Medical Lake exit on I-90 with a transit center for STA’s planned high performance transit network.     Around 20 firearms were taken from a Medical Lake home Saturday, Sept. 29. Last week, Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies helped recover some of those, while still pursuing the remaining weapons. Officers arrested Cody Wolfley, 20, on a charge of first-degree armed burglary, 17 counts of possession of a stolen firearm, theft of a firearm and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
