In their third GNL tournament, the boys’ and girls’ Cheney golf teams took third and fifth place, respectively, keeping pace with some of the league’s top teams. The boys’ team just missed out on second place, scoring 452 behind Pullman’s 451. Tyler Maurer had the team’s best score for the day, shooting an 83 that was good enough for 10th place overall. Peter Condon and Nick Hilzendeger were second and third with scores of 89 and 90, respectively. Bob Hilzendeger, in his first...
Although the week started off rough for the Cheney High School tennis team, their comeback one day later was nothing short of impressive. Last Tuesday, the team struggled against perennial GNL top team Clarkston, losing 6-1. “They were going to be tough, and we knew that coming in. Pullman barely got them 4-3,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “That was the first time they’ve lost in six years, so they’re pretty dominant.” Throughout the day, singles play wasn’t as consistent as previous outings, leading some to struggle again...
Erin Clark’s new school record in the pole vault lasted exactly one week. The Cheney senior broke her own mark of 11 feet, 6 inches set April 18 in a dual meet with East Valley and Deer Park by going six inches higher last Thursday, winning the event and helping give the Blackhawk girls two Great Northern League wins at Colville, over the host Indians, 89-58 and West Valley, 79-70. Clark hit 12 feet for the first time, easily outdistancing the competition by 3 1/2 feet. But wh...
Flying cars, automated kitchens, plastics and hoverboards. Visions of the future sometimes turn out different from what people predicted decades ago. While they can be accurate every now and then, we can all be thankful we’re not using laserdiscs for movies nor are we driving in the folding automobile from 1939. Last week an article by John Elfreth Watkins, Jr., published in The Ladies’ Home Journal around 1900, went viral showcasing some of the predictions people had for life in the year 2001. While some are a bit far...

Although losing 6-1 against Pullman, the team was able to rebound two days later against East Valley, falling only by 4-3. After that match, Overland said the g...
The Cheney High School boys’ tennis team had its shares of ups and downs last week, having mixed results. Against North Central, the team won 5-2, facing some tough competition along the way. “It was a really solid victory for us,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. No. 1 singles Tyler Bennett was unable to overcome North Central’s Justin Clawson and fell scoreless for the day. “The effort was there,” Erickson said. “I knew coming in his opponent was a strong player, but he was definitely trying his hardest.” Overall, the te...
In a 5-1 vote, the Medical Lake City Council agreed to move forward with discussions regarding Spokane County’s Joint Land Use Study and its potential implementation in the city limits. The vote was scheduled to take place at its meeting earlier this month, however final verification from the county was needed before it could proceed. Councilwoman Brenda Redell voted against the motion. All property in Medical Lake, according to the mutual agreements in the memorandum of understanding, is grandfathered in under JLUS. If a r...
For the past 10 years, Airway Heights has been one of only a few thousand cities in the United States to receive a Tree City USA award. To make it 10 years in a row, however, carries some clout with it. J.C. Kennedy, parks, recreation and community services director, said applying for the award is an annual goal for the department. Only 3,400 cities across the country receive the award each year. In an effort to highlight the achievement, the city applied for a grant offered by the Washington State Department of Natural...
The Cheney High School boys’ tennis team saw it all last week: a win, loss and a rainout. The team struggled in its match against Pullman, losing 7-0 against one of the Great Northern League’s top teams. Scores for Cheney were on the lower end, however the games were much closer than scores indicated. Head coach Jesse Erickson said Solomon Springberry, who lost 1-6 and 1-6, was being aggressive throughout his match, but couldn’t capitalize on several close games. He said the same thing went for Ryan Axtell, who lost 3-6 and 4...
After years of planning, construction has finally begun on Aspen Grove Park in the city of Airway Heights. Located just east of Craig Road north of Highway 2, the park is in the adjacent area of Aspen Grove Third Edition. The park will eventually have access via Ketchum Drive, off of Sixth Avenue. Until that road is constructed, however, the main access comes from Craig Road. Approximately 8.5 acres in size, phase one largely includes a large amount of earthwork in order to...

An emergency moratorium banning medical cannabis patient providers, collectives or co-operatives was issued by the Airway Heights City Council at its Monday, April 15 meeting. City planner Derrick Braaten said the moratorium was proposed due to a lack of clarity regarding medical marijuana dispensaries. The moratorium will allow the city to follow state regulations once those have been set in stone. He said even the city of Spokane has had difficulty with its medical marijuana ordinance. “We’re not even sure where the sta...

There is nothing quite like opening day for a new season of baseball. The anticipation is there, the hope to see your team do well and still trying to figure out who’s who after a long postseason. This becomes even more maddening when your team is playing another team that received one of your players in a trade. The start of 162 days of bliss are a simple and subtle reminder that summer is just around the corner. Listening to the first game of the season Monday night as the Oakland Athletics were lovingly torn apart by t...
