NEWPORT – A Pend Oreille County man has been arrested in connection to threats he allegedly made against the Cheney Free Press and Spokesman-Review newspapers. James E. Gandy, 47, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on Tuesday, Feb. 1. At press time, he was being held without bail. Gandy was arrested earlier in the day in Newport on felony harassment charges for allegedly making threats to “burn down” the Cheney Free Press and “kill employees,” records show. CHENEY – An area man is recovering after falling through the ice at Fish Lake Regional Park on Dec. 18. The 19-year-old man was rescued from the lake along Cheney-Spokane Road by Fire District No. 3 personnel. Fire district officials said a backboard and a rope were used to fish the man, whose name has yet to be released, from the frigid water.
