The Cheney 17U Summerhawks baseball team went 0-2 in a doubleheader against the Asotin County Blues, June 5. The first game was an 11-1 loss in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule followed by a 9-1 defeat. In game one, the Blues’ defense only allowed the Summerhawks one hit. The world lost another icon last weekend. I had just gotten home from the Cheney High School commencement ceremony when I heard that former three-time heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay, passed away at 74 years old. According to reports, his death was attributed to septic shock. Ali’s daughter, Hana Ali, said his heart continued to beat for 30 minutes after his brain stopped functioning. The Cheney 15U Summerhawks baseball team is gearing up for another summer of competition. The team will once again compete in the Spokane Indians Youth Baseball 15U League. Last year the team went 6-8, was third in the league standings and finished 1-2 in the 15U City Tournament. Glenn Chamberlain is the team’s new head coach, taking over for Nick Fell. The Cheney 17U Summerhawks baseball team is back in full swing for the summer season. The Summerhawks will once again play an independent schedule and compete against teams from Washington and Idaho. Head coach Austin Sharp leads the team for the second year with Riley Roberts as an assistant, specifically helping with pitching and infield. Cheney's Cheyenne Marchand ended her high school golf career on a high note with a fourth-place finish at the 2A state golf championships in Richland, May 25, after shooting 159 over two rounds.
