  • West Plains Recruit Structural Academy 2016-2 Grad ceremony

    The West Plains Recruit Structural Academy graduated 19 recruits from its recent class, along with six crew leaders, during a Dec. 22 ceremony at Medical Lake High School's auditorium. The academy consists of firefighter recruits from Airway Heights and Medical Lake fire departments and Spokane County Fire District 10. It requires a large time commitment by the new recruits as they spend about four and a half months and over 200 hours of hands-on training.... Full story

Boedy Taylor took second in the 182-pound bracket after he lost to Eisenhower’s Raul Jimenez, 7-1, in the championship round. On his way to the finals, Taylor defeated Wenatchee’s Carl Brandt, 2-0, and Zillah’s Chase Pidgeon, 5-3. Zack Nguyen (138) and Josh Baker (220) took third in their divisions.     The Cheney High gymnastics team wrapped up the 2016 portion of their schedule with a third-place finish (134.295 points) at a Greater Spokane League meet held at Ferris High School, Dec. 14. Central Valley won the event with 153.075 points. Junior Alexis Miller took third in all-around competition with 32.9 points, finishing behind Ferris’ Jessica Harpel (35.675) and Shadle Park’s Brooklynn Tarr (35.275).     This last weekend, mixed martial arts fans watched one of the sports great fighters compete in his last bout and ride off into the sunset. At the Dec. 17 UFC event in Sacramento, Calif., “The California Kid” Urijah Faber, 37, defeated English competitor Brad Pickett via decision in his last official fight.     One of Ivanna Lomas’ duties as the Medical Lake Parks and Recreation coordinator is to organize the city’s youth sports program.     One project the Airway Heights’ Planning Department will focus on completing in 2017 is its comprehensive plan update, which is due in June. For the plan update, Derrick Braaten, Development Services Director, said staff will work on updating the chapters that require the most time and work, the two being housing and land use.     The Medical Lake City Council got a jump start on 2017 by approving the second reading of the final $3.17 million budget at its Dec. 6 meeting.     The Medical Lake Fire Department has decided not to hold its annual holiday toy drive. In the past, the department would collect toys and give them to needy families living in the Medical Lake zip code.     The Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake will be one of many sites across the country that will adorn its gravestones with wreaths for the annual Wreaths Across America, Dec. 17. The cemetery will begin its ceremony at noon. Rudy Lopez, director of the facility, said 1,470 wreaths — 20 more than their goal — will be delivered to the cemetery for this year’s ceremony.
