The Cheney Blackhawks baseball team picked up a nonleague win on the road against Sunnyside, 11-3, March 18. The Blackhawks took an early lead with four runs in the first inning, then added a run in the third before Sunnyside answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Both Cheney boy’s and girls’ golf teams are in full swing, having competed in the March 13 Clarkston Invite. The boys finished eighth out of 10 teams with 373 points. The girls finished 10th with 548. Tyler Koohns shot 79 to lead Cheney and was six strokes behind tournament winner, Gonzaga Prep’s Nate Plaster, who finished with 73. The Medical Lake Circuit Breakers and Cheney Blackhawks high school robotics teams had success at the March 3 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Steamworks competition at West Valley High School. At its March 13 study session, the Airway Heights City Council received a few updates regarding potential street improvements for the city. One of these updates focused on safety improvements at crosswalks on Hayford Road. The Medical Lake School Board went through their Feb. 28 meeting with a light agenda. During reports, Director of Finance Chad Moss said the projected ending fund balance for the 2016-17 school year seems to be adhering to projections. “Revenues are kind of down and projections are kind of down,” he said. In response to the declining popularity of baseball, Major League Baseball officials have proposed several rule changes in order to make the game’s pace of play a bit quicker. One change that will take affect this season focuses on intentional walks. At the Feb. 23 Eastern Washington University board of trustees meeting, the Eastern Washington University police department delivered the clery report for 2015. One of the trends Police Chief Tim Walters highlighted was the increase in sexual assault cases. At its Feb. 21 meeting, the Airway Heights City Council passed a resolution that waives the requirement for the city manager to live within the city limits.
