Cheney’s Devon Waterman and Sam Pegg face off in the 170 weight class. Both wrestlers eventually advanced to regionals.

Seven Cheney wrestlers are advancing to regionals this weekend, Feb. 8-9 in Ellensburg after besting most of their Great Northern League opponents at the district tournament Feb. 1-2 at East Valley High School.

Wrestlers who fought their way to at least fifth place move on to the regional tournament, and can then make their way to state.

Junior Josh Wessels (160 pounds) took second place, winning his decisions 5-2 and 7-4, respectively, moving forward with each. In the match for first place against Trevor Eicher of Deer Park, however, he was pinned in 5 minutes, 7 seconds.

Senior Eli Mason (182) took first place in his weight class, roaring out of the gate with a 12-second pin against Deer Park’s Sojo Bergman in his first match. He went on to win his next match 17-1 and pinned Colville’s Chandler Knight in 3:11 to take the top spot.

In the 195 weight class, senior Cameron Schlotter followed suit, pinning East Valley’s Damon King in 1:19 after two bye rounds. To take first place, he defeated Deer Park’s Billy Marshall 11-2, continuing an already impressive season.

Senior Zac Corean (285) pulled out a narrow 2-1 victory to claim his first place win, besting Pullman’s Daython Maltone.

Others earning their way to the regional tournament include Vern Sanderson (145), Sam Pegg (170) and Devon Waterman (170).

Junior Tom Trude (138) narrowly missed a fifth place finish. Recovering from a first-match loss against Clarkston, he went on to defeat East Valley, Cheney teammate Billy Bakke and Colville before his 15-7 loss to Clarkston.

Likewise, junior Ben Rowe (160) lost against East Valley’s Anddrew Allen in the battle for fifth place.

Freshman Michael Ferguson (182) came close to taking fifth place in his weight class, but fell short against Colville’s Brock Vanquekelberg.
