Cheney’s Nick Steele cuts the water during the 500-yard freestyle race Saturday against visiting Selah.

Cheney High’s boys swimming team has been busy since the beginning of the year. In fact, really busy over seven days – three meets, five teams and a trio of wins.

The Blackhawks opened 2013 with a pair of wins in a Jan. 5 meet with Prosser and Grandview at Lion’s Pool in Yakima, beating the Mustangs 78-61 and Grandview, score not available at press time.

Jeff Edwards and Scott Nadeau led the Blackhawks with wins in the 200-yard individual medley (2:30.95) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.17) respectively. Edwards was also first in the 500 free (6:00.62), with Arseniy Tepp second in 7:04.53 while Nadeau was second in the 200 free (2:04.70), with Tepp third (2:37.55). Axel O’Neal was second in the 50 free (28.32), with Kit Foster third in the 100 free (1:07.06) and the 100 back (1:24.75). Talmadge Dickson was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:32.64), while Spencer Hagel took third in the 200 IM (2:56.47) and the 100 butterfly (1:24.02).

In the relays, the 400 free team of Edwards, Foster, Nadeau and O’Neal took first in 4:12.81 while the same foursome finished second in the 200 free in 1:54.31. The 200-medley team of Tepp, Dickson, Hagel and Joe Scott was second in 2:21.61.

“Both (Prosser and Grandview) are smaller teams, but we were missing eight kids so half of our team wasn’t there,” head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said. “I had to put people in events they don’t normally swim.”

Jan. 8 the Blackhawks hosted a pair of larger teams in 4A Richland and 3A Hanford, losing 112-47 to the Bombers and 131-39 to the Falcons. Hochwalt said Cheney had some notable swims, with nine swimmers setting new individual district times.

Nadeau dropped a second in both the 200 IM (2:20.77) and the 500 free (5:43.26) for third in both events. Chris Boyle turned in his fastest time this season in the 50 free at 25.37, with the 200 relay team of Nadeau, Boyle, Foster and Steele setting a season best 1:44.64 (second) and the 400 team of Nadeau, Edwards, Boyle and Steele doing likewise in 3:55.48.

Last Saturday Cheney got its third win with a 104-65 home victory over a more evenly matched, roster-wise, Selah team, notching six first place finishes. Nadeau had two of the wins, touching the wall first in the 200 IM (2:17.63) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.35) with Steele winning the 200 and 500 free in 2:06.46 and 5:48.81.

Boyle was first in the 100 breast (1:13.32) while Hagel led a trio of Cheney swimmers in the top three spots of the 100 free, first at 1:04.51 with Foster second (1:05.90) and Justin Barker third (1:09.44). Boyle took second in the 50 free (25.42) with Edwards second in the 500 free (6:07.68) and Scott second in the 100 breast (1:23.45).

Third-place finishes went to Xavier Meyer in the 200 free (2:31.15), Edwards in the 200 IM (2:29.21) and Dickson in the 100 back (1:40.12).

The 400 free A team of Nadeau, Boyle, Edwards and Steele was first in 3:51.97, with the B team of Foster, Meyer, Hagel and O’Neal second in 4:33.10. The 200 medley team of Caleb Prophet, Scott, Edwards and Tyler Barnes was second in 2:13.80, as was the 200 free team of Nadeau, Boyle, Foster and Steele at 1:43.85.

Cheney (3-5) wraps up its dual meet season Saturday at Pullman, and will use the next two weeks to get ready for districts in Ellensburg, Feb. 1-2.
